  • Patent number: 9601081
Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a system for displaying and designing one or more colors on digital display devices, non-digital display media, or a combination thereof. The system can comprise one or more comparative colors, background colors, or a combination thereof for improved color visual comparison. The system can be used for comparing and selecting colors, such as for use in fashion color designs, automotive color designs, architecture color designs, appliance color designs, or a combination thereof. This disclosure is further directed to a kit and a method for displaying and producing one or more colors.

Date of Patent: March 21, 2017
Assignee: AXALTA COATING SYSTEMS IP CO., LLC
Inventors: David H. Alman, David Lee Griffus, Robert Vincent Canning, Jr., Mary C. Slayton
  • Publication number: 20150276485
Abstract: A system and method is provided for chromatically sorting a plurality of colors into fan decks. The method comprises receiving color identifier data and color measurement data in at least one illumination and viewing geometry for the plurality of colors to be sorted into the fan decks and clustering the colors in a processor. The colors are then assigned to the fan decks based on the similarity of the colors as determined by the clustering.

  • Patent number: 6891617
Abstract: An apparatus, and method of use thereof, for multiangular visual evaluations of color properties of paint color samples which contain metallic flakes, comprising a cylindrical or semi-cylindrical shaped body capable of securing a color sample panel upon the central axis, wherein the circumference of the body has a partially glossy or mirrored reflective surface, and also has one or more marks indicating specific aspecular viewing angles relative to the plane of a color sample panel, thus allowing for improved correlation between visual and instrumental color evaluations of coated surfaces which contain metallic flakes.
    Type: Grant

  • Publication number: 20040218182
Abstract: The present method invention provides a portable method useful for identifying the effect pigments used in developing a color matched formula for a vehicle repair paint. The method comprises observation of effect pigment properties of the coating of a vehicle to be matched, in a field location with a portable magnification apparatus, and comparison of the effect pigment properties with reference sample(s) properties of available effect pigments, thus enabling precise selection of effect pigment(s). The method may also utilize features derived from images of physical reference samples of available effect pigments, for comparison purposes.

  • Patent number: 4615902
Abstract: A process for forming paint panel color standards in which a multiplicity of panels are painted and marked with a man/machine readable ID number; the improvement used with this process is as follows:(1) electronically determining the ID number of each panel and measuring each panel color coordinate values and feeding this information to a computer which establishes a criteria for various panel quality standards;(2) sorting the panels by electronically determining panel ID number and feeding the number to the computer which signals a robot to place the panel with a group of panels having the same quality standard.

  • Patent number: 4479718
Abstract: An improved method for instrumentally characterizing the optical properties of a surface containing metallic particles such as a paint containing metallic flakes by using multiangular spectrophotometric or colormetric measurements to derive color constants for the paint, wherein the improvement comprises using three multiangular measurements, preferably 15.degree., 45.degree. and 110.degree. as measured from the specular angle.
