Abstract: Dust poses a significant threat to human and environmental health. In 2015, an estimated 4.2 million deaths, as well as numerous health issues, were attributed to dust. Unlike other major contaminant transport pathways (e.g., water, soil, biota), atmospheric transmission is relatively unobstructed, able to rapidly transport large masses of materials over long distances and broadly impact areas downwind on local to global scales. Accordingly, dust affects global biogeochemical cycles, pollutes water bodies and air masses, and impacts global climate. Therefore, developing innovative, environmentally-compatible technologies capable of mitigating dust emissions is crucial to protect human and environmental health from mining related dust.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to polymers comprising glycolipids and methods for producing and using the same. In particular, the polymers of the invention comprise a polymer backbone and a plurality of glycolipid side chains. The glycolipid moieties present in polymers of the invention are metal ion complexing agents. As such, polymers described herein can be used for the remediation of aqueous solutions to remove metal ions.
