Patent number: 7882684Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method for producing a high burst slider zipper which allows for bottom filling of reclosable packages, such as large bags, and further provides increased resistance to damage from the dropping or shock loading of the filled package. This is achieved by providing a peel seal or other frangible or separable connection between the zipper profiles, and by sealing a portion of one of the flanges to itself by a hard seal above the peel seal. This causes the external forces on a bag from bottom filling or shock loading to be directed toward the hard seal and further directed so as to cause a shear force against the peel seal, thereby increasing the resistance of the package to external forces.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 2009Date of Patent: February 8, 2011Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: David J. Anzini, Rusty Koenigkramer, Clifton R. Howell, Steven Ausnit

Patent number: 7866011Abstract: A zipper assembly for a reclosable package or bag is disclosed. The zipper assembly includes two profiles with flanges and internal interlocking elements on the interior of the flanges. The exterior of one of the flanges includes two exterior parallel press-to-close profile-like interlocking elements which are brought into engagement with each other by folding the flanges of the zipper assembly. This increases the burst handling capability of the zipper assembly and the package or bag to which it is attached. Alternatives include substituting a peel seal for the exterior interlocking element as well as an exterior label or sticker to maintain the flanges in a folded configuration.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2007Date of Patent: January 11, 2011Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Charles Greco, Rusty Koenigkramer, David J. Publication number: 20090297071Abstract: A flexible bag having a reclosable zipper construction in which material is provided on the inside face of one or both zipper flanges that results in a weak seal area or an unsealed area when the side seals are made. The weak seal area or unsealed area is located on the product side of the zipper closure profiles. Elevated pressure inside the bag will cause the weak seal area of the side seal to fail as intended or will cause the zipper flanges in the unsealed area to separate, resulting in a venting action during cooking of the bag contents. For example, steam inside the bag can escape through the vent or vents while the zipper remains closed. Preferably the bag has a bottom gusset so that it can stand upright in a microwave oven. The bag may be opened to add contents, resealed and then heated.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 27, 2009Publication date: December 3, 2009Applicant: ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS INC.Inventors: Rusty E. Publication number: 20090297817Abstract: In the area of manufacture of reclosable packaging, a coextruded layer is provided between the polyethylene zipper and the package walls which are typically a polypropylene substrate. The coextruded layer is an evenly distributed polypropylene/polyethylene mix. Because of the content of polypropylene in coextruded layer, a strong bond is formed with the polypropylene package walls. Likewise, because of the content of polyethylene in coextruded layer, a strong bond is formed with the polyethylene zipper.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 21, 2008Publication date: December 3, 2009Inventors: Francis Olajide, JR., David J. Publication number: 20090274399Abstract: A bulk material product bag has an adhesive closure strip fixedly secured thereon. As a result of the adhesive closure strip being oriented transversely across the normally open end region of the bulk material product bag so as to be adhesively bonded to both the back and front sides of the bulk material product bag, the adhesive closure strip effectively closes and seals the open end region of the bulk material product bag. Handle structure can also be integrally incorporated within the adhesive closure strip.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 5, 2008Publication date: November 5, 2009Inventors: Paul Michael Jenkins, David J. Patent number: 7527585Abstract: A method of manufacturing flexible containers that are hermetically resealable. Each resealable container comprises a receptacle and a pair of plastic zipper strips. The zipper strips are flattened at the ends within the side seal regions and are joined to each other, without substantial deformation of the closure profiles, in respective transition areas substantially contiguous with the side seals. These transition areas of zipper strip joinder assist in providing a leakproof transition from the openable section of the zipper to the side seals, where the closure profiles are fused and flattened (i.e., crushed).Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2005Date of Patent: May 5, 2009Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: David J. Patent number: 7524110Abstract: The disclosure relates to a semi-soft cap or patch which is secured by adhesive to a slider on a zipper in a reclosable package. This cap or patch prevents the slider from puncturing the web or film of the bag during high pressure pasteurization. Further, the cap or patch is secured to a tear-away header which is formed as a shroud over the zipper. This allows the user to tear off the header which likewise removes the cap or patch from the slider. The header, with the cap or patch still attached thereto, can thereafter be disposed of as a single piece.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2005Date of Patent: April 28, 2009Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: David J. Publication number: 20090097783Abstract: The reclosable package or bag includes a zipper which allows for high burst strength while maintaining easy opening capability. The zipper includes first and second profiles which include respective first and second exterior flanges which are glued or heat sealed to corresponding first and second panels of the package or bag. The first profile further includes an interior flange. A peel seal is formed between the interior flange and the second exterior flange. In this configuration, a high load on the panels puts the peel seal into a shear mode, which results in greatly increased strength of the peel seal and therefore of both the zipper and the package or bag. After the high load subsides, the peel seal returns to the configuration in which it can be separated by a much lower peel force, such as is applied by a consumer during ordinary opening.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 10, 2007Publication date: April 16, 2009Inventors: David J. Anzini, Rusty Koenigkramer

Publication number: 20090097782Abstract: The zippers include flanges with fully or partially formed apertures or notches to allow drive rolls to positively engage and feed the zippers. Alternatively, a T-shaped guide rail can be formed on at least one flange to allow drive rolls to engage the zipper. These aspects are particularly adaptable to feeding a zipper or zipper segment to a transverse direction zipper applicator.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 15, 2007Publication date: April 16, 2009Inventors: David J. Anzini, Murray Edward Bruce Leighton
