  • Patent number: 7238208
Abstract: A kit for assembly of a modular joint prosthesis (10) includes at least two shank/body elements (22/20) sized for insertion into the shank of the bone and at least two head members (48) sized to replace one bearing surface of the joint. Each shank/body element (22/20) has a collar (58) that has a shallow width and a circular plan view and that is formed to overhang a resected level of the bone. The collar (58) has a male taper on its side wall (64). Each head member (48) has a first geometric axis (52) therethrough and defines a part spherical cavity (49) with a skirt (66) extending about the cavity (49). The skirt (66) provides a female taper for receiving and providing a mechanical connection with the male taper on the side wall (64) of each collar (58). A second axis extends (55) through the skirt (66). The first axis (52) and second axis (55) may be coincident or offset from one another.

  • Patent number: 6264657
Abstract: A kit is for removing a spacer having a surface and ends from a spine. The kit includes an osteotome, a threaded extractor, and a trephine, each for releasing spacer from spine. Osteotome includes a cutting portion having a surface formed to engage surface of spacer and a tip formed to cut bone surrounding surface of spacer. Extractor includes a side wall having threads formed to cut one of the ends of spacer and pull spacer away from spine when side wall rotates relative to spacer. Trephine includes a blade having a sleeve defining a passageway and including an edge formed to cut material surrounding surface of spacer.

  • Patent number: 6159215
Abstract: A spacer-insertion instrument for delivering a spacer to a spine is disclosed. The instrument includes a handle portion and a guide coupled to the handle portion. The instrument further includes a shaft coupled to the handle portion and extending along the guide. The instrument further includes a tip including an attachment end portion coupled to the shaft and opposing fingers movable relative to one another and adapted to grasp the spacer when the shaft is moved to actuate the fingers. The handle portion includes a grip and a trigger coupled to the grip and to the shaft and movement of the trigger toward the grip causes the fingers to move toward one another. A method for delivering a vertebral body spacer to a disc space formed in a spine between adjacent vertebral bodies is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6120542
Abstract: A kit for assembly of a modular joint prosthesis includes at least two stem-body elements sized for insertion into the shank of the bone and at least two head members sized to replace one bearing surface of the joint. Each stem-body element includes a collar to be superimposed on the resected level of the bone, said collar providing a male taper at its outer diameter. Each head member is formed with an inner surface providing a corresponding female taper for receiving the male taper of each stem-body element. The engagement of the female taper on the male taper defines a space above the collar and a passageway extending from the space between the head member and the collar and provides a mechanical connection between the head and the stem-body element.

  • Patent number: 5728161
Abstract: A joint prosthesis including a first element comprising a joint bearing surface and a second element which has an integral stem and body portion. The body includes a collar having a male taper outer surface configured to engage a complementary female taper surface formed in the joint bearing surface of the first element. Engagement of the female taper on the male taper provides the sole mechanical connection between the joint bearing member and the stem body element. The invention includes a kit for assembly of a modular joint prosthesis, the kit includes at least two stem body elements and at least two joint bearing members.
