Abstract: Arrangements for promoting the restriction of fluid flow along a shaft via providing a deformable ring member in an annulus between the shaft and housing. In an initial general condition, the deformable ring member permits free fluid flow in a general direction along the shaft while in a second, constricted condition, the deformable ring closes or blocks a gap or clearance normally conducive to free fluid flow to thereby restrict fluid flow. An actuation medium, which can take any of a very wide variety of forms, preferably promotes constriction of the deformable ring member directly or indirectly.

Abstract: A method for identifying select ones of insurance records which possess a favorable subrogation potential. The method includes receiving data indicative of a plurality of claims; automatically calculating a base score to identify select ones of the claims which demonstrate at least a given probability of expected subrogation recovery dependently upon the received data; automatically identifying risk factors for each of the select claims; and, automatically scoring each of the select claims dependently upon the base scores and identified risk factors to provide a value indicative of an expected subrogation recovery.

Abstract: The approaches of the present disclosure provide for the efficient technology of intelligent association of still images with contextual information relating to sounds such as a sound that may have been ambient when a still image was captured. In particular, a user may use a media device, such as a smart phone or tablet computer, to capture a still image and record first audio, for example, at the time of capturing the still image for a predetermined period of time. The first audio may be then processed and analyzed so as to recognize a particular song or melody, and then a high quality second audio related to the recognized song or melody is downloaded and associated with the still image. Accordingly, the visual nature of still images is enhanced with data relating to contextual auditory information, which boosts the sensory and memory experience for the user.

Abstract: Systems for switching optical signals are disclosed. Such a system may include a splitter and a plurality of polarizing filters. The splitter may be configured to receive emitted light and duplicate the emitted light into a plurality of light copies. Each polarizing filter may have a polarization and may be operably connected to the splitter. In addition, each polarizing filter may be configured to receive at least one of the plurality of light copies, filter the at least one of the plurality of received light copies such that light having a similar polarization as that of the polarizing filter passes through the polarizing filter, and output one of a plurality of outputs.

A cursor having an associated item and configured to allow a user to exchange a selected item from the field with the cursor item. Wherein forming a predetermined arrangement of three or more identical items results in the items within the arrangement being removed from the field.

Abstract: A question item comprising: textual, visual or auditory subject matter; a query or instruction pertaining to the subject matter; and a representation of a response mechanism for receiving a user response to the query or instruction, may be retrieved from a data store. The subject matter, query or instruction and response mechanism may be presented in a presentation sequence, wherein a presentation duration of each of the subject matter, query or instruction and response mechanism is controlled by user input. Based on the user input, a presentation duration of each of the subject matter, query or instruction, and response mechanism may be determined. Each of the three presentation durations may be stored. A completion time may be determined based on one or more of the presentation durations and may be stored along with response accuracy, for use in calculating a user competency measure for the question item.

Abstract: A method and systems for implementing an access control algorithm across an optical network are described. The network includes a plurality of switch port devices, each including a local control plane processor. The local control plane processors receive control information related to the plurality of switch port devices; determine destination devices to which each of the plurality of switch port devices can transmit data and availability to receive incoming bursts at the switch port devices; and determine a time during the transmission period when the data is to be transmitted to at least one destination. Optionally, a central control plane processor receives control information from the local control plane processors and determines a time during a transmission period when at least a portion of the data is to be transmitted from at least one of the switch port devices to a destination, thereby regulating traffic over the optical network.

Abstract: What is disclosed is a novel device and method to manage displays in a device with a camera. In one example, a first display is on a first side of the wireless device and a second display along with a camera is on the second side of the device. A facial detector detects a presence of a human face in an image captured by the camera. A power control circuit turns on the first display and/or second display in response to receiving a signal from the facial detector that a human face is detected. In a further example, a matching algorithm is used to determine if the human face in front of the camera matches a previously stored human face. In response to a match being found, an image associated with the previous stored human face is presented on the second display.

Abstract: A system for transmitting data on an optical burst network. The system includes an optical core configured to switch data bursts based upon a wavelength of the data bursts. The system also includes a plurality of switch port devices operably connected to the optical core, wherein at least one of the plurality of switch port devices is configured to transfer the data bursts to the optical core and at least one of the plurality of switch port devices is configured to receive the data bursts from the optical core. The system further includes at least one control plane processor operably connected to the plurality of switch port devices and configured to transmit scheduling information to at least one of the plurality of switch port devices configured to transfer the data bursts to the optical core.

Abstract: One aspect of the present invention provides a magnifier device for mounting to a container. The device comprises a container mount comprising a base portion and an adjustable portion. Each of the base portion and the adjustable portion comprises a container engaging surface. The container engaging surfaces are arranged for engaging a container received therebetween. The adjustable portion is mounted for movement relative to the base portion in (i) a contracting direction wherein the container engaging surfaces move relatively towards one another and (ii) an expanding direction wherein the container engaging surfaces move relatively away from one another, thus enabling receipt of containers of various sizes between the container engaging surfaces. The container mount comprises a resilient member for biasing the adjustable portion in the contracting direction, thus urging engagement of the container engaging surfaces against a container received therebetween.

Abstract: The present invention describes a device and system for simulating normal and disease state cardiac functioning, including an anatomically accurate left cardiac simulator for training and medical device testing. The system and device uses pneumatically pressurized chambers to generate ventricle and atrium contractions. In conjunction with the interaction of synthetic mitral and aortic valves, the system is designed to generate pumping action that produces accurate volume fractions and pressure gradients of pulsatile flow, duplicating that of a human heart. Through the use of a remote handheld electronic controller and manual adjustments from a main control panel, the air pressure level, fluidic pressure, and heart rate is controlled to induce contractions that simulate a wide variety of heart conditions ranging from normal heart function to severely diseased or injured heart conditions.

Abstract: A method and system to manage user reputations is described. In some embodiments, a first picture is received from a first user and a second picture is received from a second user. The first picture and the second picture are associated with an in-person transaction related to an item. The method determines whether both the first picture and the second picture identify the item. The method further determines whether both the first picture and the second picture were taken at a similar geographic location. If the first picture and the second picture identify the item and were taken at a similar geographic location, transaction feedback is requested from the first user. A reputation score related to the second user is updated based on transaction feedback received from the first user.

Abstract: A cosmetic compact includes a twistable lid assembly that spins relative to a base assembly about a hinge to change between an open and a closed position. The hinge is disposed in the cosmetic compact at an oblique angle that positions a top surface of the cosmetic compact to face a user after twisting open. The lid assembly is twistable by about 180 degrees relative to the base assembly of the cosmetic compact. By virtue of having the twistable lid assembly, the cosmetic compact is capable of simple and reliable opening. The twistable lid assembly also allows a mirror placed on the top surface of the compact to be useful in both a closed position and an open position.

Abstract: A method for managing charitable donations of a donor. The method includes receiving donation information associated with a charitable donation of a donor from a browser extension of a browser application, where the browser application is executing on a user system associated with the donor and where the browser extension obtains the donation information independent of web content presented in the browser application. The method further includes receiving a request for the donation information from a tax preparation entity. The method further includes in response to the request, sending the donation information to the tax preparation entity, where the donation information is used by the tax preparation entity to generate tax documentation for the donor.

Abstract: Disclosed is a system for wirelessly powering an item. A source is configured to send wireless power. A target is configured to receive the wireless power and convert the wireless power to a useable power. A component is connected to and configured to receive the useable power from the target. When the component receives the usable power, the component activates. Also disclosed is an assembly including a system for wirelessly powering a component and a structure for supporting the system and an item.
