Patent number: 7700035Abstract: A direct smelting plant for producing molten metal from metalliferous feed material includes a pretreatment unit for pretreating metalliferous feed material and producing pretreated feed material, a direct smelting vessel for smelting pretreated metalliferous feed material to molten metal and a hot feed material transfer apparatus for transferring pretreated metalliferous feed material from the pretreatment unit to a solids delivery device of the direct smelting vessel. The transfer apparatus includes a hot feed material storage device, a hot feed material transfer line, device for unblocking the hot feed material transfer line and a pressurising device. The hot feed material transfer apparatus includes a device for returning pretreated metalliferous feed material to the pretreatment unit.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 2004Date of Patent: April 20, 2010Assignee: Outotec OyjInventors: Andreas Orth, David John Leigh, Peter Damian Burke

Patent number: 7504065Abstract: A solids feed means for a direct smelting plant is disclosed. The solids feed means includes 2 or more pairs of lances for injecting solid feed materials for a direct smelting process into a direct smelting vessel. The solids feed means also includes a main supply line and a pair of branch lines for supplying solid feed material to the lances of each pair of lances with the branch lines interconnecting the main supply line and the lances of the pair of lances. The lances are arranged around the vessel in pairs of diametrically opposed lances. At least one pair of lances is provided for injecting metalliferous feed material (such as iron-containing materials, particularly iron ore fines) and at least one of the other pairs of lances is provided for injecting solid carbonaceous material (such as coal) and optionally fluxes. The pairs of lances are arranged around the vessel so that adjacent lances are lances that are provided to inject different materials.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2007Date of Patent: March 17, 2009Assignee: Technological Resources Pty LimitedInventors: Rodney James Dry, David John Leigh

Patent number: 7494615Abstract: A direct smelting plant that includes an effective and reliable solids feed means for injecting solid feed materials, particularly carbonaceous material, into a direct smelting vessel of the plant is disclosed. The solid feed means is characterised by independent supply of carbonaceous material to injection lances. The independent supply of carbonaceous material minimises the possible adverse impact of a breakdown of one or more than one lance or a breakdown of the carbonaceous material injection means for that lance or lances.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2005Date of Patent: February 24, 2009Assignee: Technological Resources Pty. LimitedInventors: Peter Damian Burke, David John Leigh

Patent number: 7422622Abstract: A process and apparatus for supplying solid feed materials for a direct smelting process to solids injection lances of a direct smelting vessel is disclosed. The feed materials supply apparatus includes a supply line (L) for conveying iron-containing material and solid carbonaceous material under pressure to solids injection lances (7), and the supply line includes a main feeder line section (15) and a plurality of branch line sections (17) extending from the main feeder line section. Each branch line section is connected to one solids injection lance for supplying iron-containing material and carbonaceous material to that lance. The apparatus further includes an assembly for dispensing iron-containing material under pressure into the main feeder line section of the supply line and an assembly for dispensing carbonaceous material under pressure into the main feeder line section of the supply line.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2005Date of Patent: September 9, 2008Assignee: Technologies Resources Pty Ltd.Inventor: David John Leigh

Patent number: 6322745Abstract: A vessel which produces metal from a metalliferous feed material by a direct smelting process is disclosed. The vessel contains a molten bath having a metal layer (15) and a slag layer (16) on the metal layer and has a gas continuous space (31) above the slag layer. The vessel includes a hearth formed of refractory material having a base (3) and sides (55) in contact with the molten metal and side walls (5) which extend upwardly from the sides (55) of the hearth and are in contact with the slag layer and the gas continuous space. The side walls that contact the gas continuous space include water cooled panels (57) and a layer of slag on the panels.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2000Date of Patent: November 27, 2001Assignee: Technological Resources Pty.
