    Abstract: A theft deterrent device adapted to be connected to an item of merchandise to discourage shoplifting includes a flexible lanyard. In one embodiment, the first end of the lanyard is removably anchored to the holder with the second end of the lanyard being lockable to the holder. The lanyard may thus be replaced if severed by a shoplifter so that the holder may be reused. The invention also provides a lanyard having first and second ends with a latch that holds that ends together so that the ends may be inserted as a unit into the holder before being locked to the holder.

The second locking member is in the form of a stepped post that snaps between the opposed teeth to lock the post to the teeth. The tag may be unlocked by moving the teeth with respect to the post. In one embodiment of the invention, a portion of the body of the first element may be destroyed while moving the teeth from the locked position to the unlocked position.

The holder is removed from the merchandise by cutting the hinge of the holder and sliding the first and second members apart. In another embodiment of the invention, the first and second members of the holder are held together by locking fingers that may be released with a specially-designed key so that the holder may be reused. In another embodiment of the invention, the holder is opened with a key that breaks the locking fingers to release the members from each other.
