    Abstract: A system controls the diameter of both a neck region and a full diameter region of a monocrystalline rod being pulled from molten material held in a crucible. The system uses a video camera viewing light reflected from a meniscus around the rod where the rod emerges from a melt surface of the molten material. The video camera has a zoom lens for enlarging an image of the meniscus during growth of the neck of the rod and for reducing an image of the meniscus during growth of a full diameter body of the rod. A computer controlling a pull rate for the neck growth of the rod is rapidly responsive to a count of total camera pixels illuminated by the image of the meniscus during neck growth.

A portable vault card that is removably coupled to the PC is programmed to generate tokens generation and perform transaction accounting. An application interface module in the PC, which interfaces with the non-metering application programs, issues a request for digital tokens in response to requests for indicia from a non-metering application program. A secure communications module in the PC, which securely communicates with the vault card when the vault card is coupled to the PC, sends the request for digital token to the vault card and receives a digital token generated by the vault card.

The client computer systems issue requests for digital tokens to the server computer system in response to requests for indicia from the non-metering application programs.

The remote client computer initiates a postage metering transaction in the PSD by sending a request for evidence of postage payment to the local client computer.

The PSD includes unique identification, postal value storage and a digital signature generator. The clients function as a postage metering network wherein a client requests evidence of postage payment from a remote PSD for concluding postage metering transactions. Each of the clients determines which of the remote PSDs are available for metering transactions on the network by broadcast messages and requests. In one embodiment, a broadcast request for the identity of remote PSDs whose host is logged onto the network is sent over the network by a client when the client logs onto the network.

    Abstract: System and method for securely backing up and reliably retrieving vault data in a metering system that includes a host processor operatively coupled to a vault. Whenever a transaction is completed by the vault, the vault cryptographically signs the vault data, including ascending register, descending register and piece count and sends the cryptographically signed vault data to the host processor where it is stored in a data file assigned to the vault. Each storage of the cryptographically signed vault data is indexed to create a historical log of vault transactions. If the vault is lost or damaged so that vault data cannot be retrieved from the vault, the cryptographically signed vault data is retrieved from the host processor data file and verified.

The token keys are a function of the verifier master keys and a code valid for a limited time. The pointer algorithm is an appropriate symmetric key cryptographic algorithm and the code is function of a date dependent parameter. The master keys are distributed to postal and vendor data centers.

    Abstract: A secure metering vault for use with a host printing module via a secure communication link includes a secure output device such as a light emitting diode (LED) configured for outputting the available postal funds stored in the secure metering module in response to a detected malfunction in the secure communication link. The vault includes a processor that monitors the condition of the secure communication link, and that controls the storage and updating of the stored available postal funds in a nonvolatile memory. If a failure is detected in the communication link, the processor outputs to the LED the stored value of the available postal funds based upon a prescribed format, such as Morse code or some other blinking pattern that is equivalent to the postal funds remaining in the vault.

    Abstract: A method of creating an open system digital token includes sending predetermined information to a digital token generation process. A set of characters are randomly selected from the predetermined information. A mapping algorithm is applied to the selected characters to facilitate a character recognition process and a random number algorithm is applied to the mapped selected characters to obtain a random number. A digital token is calculated using the random number. The predetermined information may be delivery address information in the form of an ASCII string which is reduced by eliminating certain non-alphanumeric characters from the ASCII string. Certain characters can be modified to facilitate OCR processing. A plurality of characters are randomly selected from the reduced ASCII string to determine random positions in the reduced ASCII string. The ASCII code of the selected characters are mapped to the code of a reduced space using a mapping table.
