  • Patent number: 7618742
Abstract: An electrochemical battery cell with an electrical lead for electrical contact between one of the cell's electrodes and the side of the cell container. A portion of the lead, disposed between the electrode assembly and the side wall of the container, includes an initially non-planar shape that is in a partially deformed, compressed configuration within the cell to bias the lead against the internal surface of the side wall of the container, thereby applying sufficient force to provide good electrical contact between the electrode and the container. The initially non-planar shape can include one or more V-shaped or arc-shaped grooves, and the grooves can be disposed parallel to a longitudinal axis of the electrode assembly. Also disclosed is a process for making such a cell.

  • Publication number: 20090230923
Abstract: A non-rechargeable battery includes a housing with an opening and a cover that closes the opening in the housing. The housing and the cover define a volumetric region within the battery. The battery also includes at least one electrochemical cell and a management component, both located in the volumetric region. The management component includes programmable electrical circuitry that selectively interrupts electrical current output from the cell out of the battery based on an actively monitored state of the battery. The chemistry of the battery is Li—FeS2 or other non-rechargeable chemistry.

  • Publication number: 20080254343
Abstract: An electrochemical cell having a current interrupting switch as an internal component of the cell that is thermally responsive and breaks an electrical path within the cell thereby preventing current flow when temperature within the cell is at or above an activating temperature. The switch is reversible and current flow and a closed circuit is re-established when temperature within the cell returns below the activating temperature.

  • Publication number: 20080026293
Abstract: A primary electrochemical cell, and a method for making the same, relies upon a jellyroll electrode with a positive electrode material deposited on a conductive carrier having partially uncoated portion wherein electrochemically active material is coated on only one side of the carrier in order to achieve superior performance in comparison to a cell having no such uncoated portion. The partially uncoated portion is oriented along a longitudinal axis of the jellyroll. The positive electrode material is preferably iron disulfide, whereas the negative electrode comprises lithium or a lithium alloy.

  • Publication number: 20080026288
Abstract: An electrochemical cell, particularly an electrochemical cell having a container with a positive polarity. In one embodiment, the cell is a primary cell that includes an electrode assembly having a lithium negative electrode and a positive electrode, preferably comprising iron disulfide. The cell is provided with a spiral wound electrode assembly with a portion of the positive electrode contacting the container. The positive electrode current collector contacts the container in one embodiment. The negative electrode includes an electrically conductive member that electrically contacts a cover of the cell and provides the cover with a negative polarity. In a preferred embodiment, the electrically conductive member makes pressure contact with a portion of the cell cover. A method of manufacturing such a cell is also provided.

  • Publication number: 20060046154
Abstract: The invention is an electrochemical battery cell, such as a Li/FeS2 cell, with a nonaqueous liquid electrolyte having a solvent with a high ether content and a solute including LiI and one or more additional salts, preferably LiCF3SO3, that can avoid a sharp drop in voltage on high rate and high power discharge at low temperatures, while still providing reasonable capacity on high rate and high power discharge at room temperature. The electrolyte solvent includes 1,3-dioxolane and 1,2-dimethoxyethan in a volume ratio greater than 45:55 and less than 85:15. When the total solute concentration in the electrolyte is low (0.40 to 0.65 mol/l solvent), the solute contains at least 35 mole percent LiI, and when the total solute concentration in the electrolyte is high (greater than 0.65 to 2.0 mol/l solvent), the solute contains less than 35 mole percent LiI.
