Abstract: Method, system and computer program product for communicating information regarding a managed resource in a network data processing system. A method, in a network data processing system, for communicating information regarding a managed resource includes receiving management information regarding at least one managed resource. The received management information is converted into a specified format, and the converted management information is then sent to at least one management application in conjunction with the sending of presence information to the at least one management application. The converted management information may then be extracted from the presence information for use in any desired manner. The invention provides a convenient mechanism for communicating status information and other appropriate information regarding a managed resource to interested parties connected to the network data processing system.

Abstract: An example of a solution provided here comprises automatically measuring bandwidth of a network connection; comparing results of the measuring, with bandwidth parameters; preventing a transfer of a file via the network connection, if measured bandwidth is less than a minimum acceptable value; providing to an end user an option of transferring a file via the network connection, if measured bandwidth is not less than a minimum acceptable value, but is less than an optimal value; and automatically transferring a file via the network connection, if measured bandwidth is greater than or equal to an optimal value.

Abstract: A system and method for correlating end user error reports with software developer defect logs to thereby update the end user error reports with information from the developer defect logs. With the system and method, when support personnel open an end user error report to address the problem encountered by the user, the mechanisms of the system and method search a defect report database to determine if there is any defect report related to the same error that is the subject of the opened end user error report. If so, the end user error report is updated to include information from the defect report. This information may include, for example, the identity of the source of the problem generating the error, the identity of the fix or patch that solves the problem generating the error encountered by the end user, if any, and the like.

Abstract: During performance of a process task, a journaling program is used to record keystrokes and mouse activities. A journal of the process task is then sent to a parser for conversion to a markup language, such as electronic business Extensible Markup Language (ebXLM) or Data Center Markup Language (DCML). The markup language version of the task is then validated against business rules, operating policy, etc., providing code by which the task can be automatically performed.

Abstract: An improved method, apparatus, and computer instructions for installing software on a data processing system. The process identifies files for the data processing system to be provisioned and to form identified files. The identified files are located using a location map. The location map identifies a set of files and identifies each node in a network data processing system on which a file in the set of files is located. The identified files are transferred to the data processing system from the plurality of nodes in the network data processing system using the location map to form installation files. The data processing system is provisioned using the installation files.

Abstract: An improved method, apparatus, and computer instructions in a portable device for obtaining bids for a task. Access to a task in a set of tasks for bidding is provided through a wireless network. The access to the task includes a specification of a selected distance between a bidding entity and a location of the portable device that the bidding entity is required to be located within for generating bids. A bid for the task is received from an entity through the wireless network if the entity is within a selected distance of a location of the portable device. The bid may be accepted for completing the task.

Abstract: A method in a data processing system for managing jobs. A change to a job receiving that is un-instantiated. A reservation for the job is created. Instantiated jobs for an instance of the job are monitored corresponding to the reservation, and applying the change to the instance of the job responsive to identifying the instantiated job.

Abstract: A method in a processing system for managing backup data on a set of nodes in a network data processing system. An inventory of files is generated on a set of nodes in the network data processing system. An initial map from the inventory is created, wherein the first initial map includes an identification of each file located on a node in the set of nodes. A location map is built from the initial map and the location map identifies a set of files and identifies each node on which a file in the set of files is located, wherein at least one node in the set of nodes is a peer node to another node in the set of nodes.

A presence sensing security method can include the step of securing access to only a portion of a computing device based upon the presence of at least one of an authorized user and an unauthorized user. The client uses the indication of the identified current availability to selectively use the Web service.

Responsive to a request to present a window in the foreground, the priority level of an application currently containing the user focus is compared with a priority level of an application presenting the window. If the application presenting the window has a higher or equal priority than the application currently containing the user focus, the window is presented in the foreground. If the application presenting the window has a lower priority than the application currently containing the user's focus, the request to present the window in the foreground is ignored. Information regarding the request is then stored in a log for later viewing.

Abstract: A computer system includes a plurality of LEDs situated in correspondence to a plurality of connectors. System peripherals which connect to the plurality of connectors are outfitted to include a transponder having a unique RF ID tag The system further includes an RFID reader which detects an RF ID tag emitted by a proximate transponder when a user proceeds to plug-in a system peripheral outfitted with such transponder. The system further includes a light controller which selectively energizes the LEDs and provides a distinguishing energization signal to at least one but less than all of the LEDs based on the RF ID value. Preferably, the system processor oversees the selection.

Abstract: The system of the present invention is a method and system that enables consumers to receive specialized product and company information on demand to aid in consumer purchases. The system of this invention can comprise a physical interface device, a consumer profile, a products and services interface, and a consumer database. Each user in the system has an individual profile the consumer can set to identify their preferences in regard to a particular product. When the consumer sends a query about a particular product, the method of the invention performs a comparison of the consumer preferences a product with objectives ratings for that product. The consumer receives a result of these comparisons with an indication of whether the product matches the preferences indicated by the consumer. A match suggests that the product is one the consumer would purchase.

Abstract: A monitoring program contains a method for detecting a load imbalance in a group of servers and providing notification so that corrections can be made. An embodiment of the invention reads from the address resolution protocol (ARP) cache to determine which server addresses are present, then clears the ARP cache. The address resolution protocol will repopulate the cache from traffic it snoops and from new requests. By performing this query and clear operation periodically, the tracking program can form a picture of the activity levels of the servers. When a significant imbalance exists, the program notifies a control console for human intervention to solve the problem. The tracking program will periodically write its results to a log file, allowing reports for various time periods to be produced as needed. By this mechanism, not only can an imbalance be quickly detected, but underutilization can be picked up by comparing known capability of a resource to its actual usage.

Abstract: A web browser plug-in supports a team approach to Internet research. An initial search, preferably by a web robot, generates an initial plurality of potentially relevant URLs, which are stored in a shared URL database. Team members are notified when new URLs are added to the database. Team members, optionally through an access control system, evaluate and rank the URLs for relevance. URLs are managed based on their rank, such as ordering their display and deleting non-relevant URLs. The rank of a URL may be indicated visually in a web browser, such as by displaying graphic icons adjacent its title. The method may be iterative, with additional searches conducted, preferably via additional web robots, with the additional URLs returned being evaluated, ranked, and managed in the URL database.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer instructions for allocating resources based on predictions of service level agreement (SLA) breaches in order to minimize costs are provided. With the method, apparatus, and computer instructions, a prediction that an SLA will be breached is received from a prediction engine associated with the SLM system. Based on a prediction that an SLA will be breached, a minimum cost analysis is performed to determine if computer resources may be shifted from another service consumer under another SLA to facilitate the service consumer of the potentially breached SLA in order to reduce the cost of the penalty associated with breaching SLAs. If so, resources are reallocated in order to minimize penalties associated with SLA breaches.

Abstract: The present invention is a method and system that determines the connection availability of a mobile or cellular device to the communication network in the current location of the mobile or cellular device. The system of the present invention comprises a communication tower containing a means to monitor the current connection capacity of the tower. This monitoring process would involve establishing the maximum call connection capability of the tower. This process also maintains a current count of the number of calling devices that are connected through the tower. As the number of connections increases toward the maximum number of connections, the tower will begin to broadcast messages to mobile and cellular telephone devices in the area of the tower the current connection capability to that tower. The mobile or cellular devices would receive the message and display the information to the device user.
