Patent number: 10202238Abstract: A locking device for a container is provided. The locking device contains a weighted mechanism having a mounting block and at least one paddle mounted on the mounting block. The weighted mechanism is movable between a locked position and an unlocked position. The at least one paddle having two opposing ends. A first end is mounted to the mounting block by a rotatable coupling to allow the paddle to pivot thereon. A second end of the paddle is detachably mounted to a surface of the mounting block, such that a sudden jerking or jarring motion, such as by impact with the ground, causes the second end to detach from the mounting block to block the weighted mechanism from moving from the locked position to the opened position.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 2015Date of Patent: February 12, 2019Assignee: Serio-Us Industries, Inc.Inventors: David L. Patent number: 10046911Abstract: A locking device is provided, preferably for a container. The locking device keeps the lid of the container closed when the container is knocked over on its side, with a sudden jerking or jarring motion, such as by impact with the ground, to prevent spillage of its contents. The locking device, however, allows the lid to open when the waste container is tipped over, preferably in a forward direction, by a dumping operation.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2017Date of Patent: August 14, 2018Assignee: Serio-Us Industries, Inc.Inventors: David L. Reeb, James L. Martin, II

Publication number: 20170320666Abstract: The present invention generally relates to locking devices for waste containers, particularly residential or commercial waste containers. The present invention also relates to a waste container having a locking device which keeps the container closed when a sudden jerking or jarring, such as ground impact, is applied on the container, but allows the container to be opened during the dumping or tipping process. The locking device contains an impact detecting paddle or rolling member to provide a mechanical impact sensor that can detect whether the container has been unintendedly tipped over in the forward direction or whether it is being tipped over, such as for dumping.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 8, 2017Publication date: November 9, 2017Inventors: David L. REEB, James L. MARTIN, II

Publication number: 20170297817Abstract: A container comprises a hollow body portion, a hinged lid member pivotally attached to the body portion, an automatic latch assembly fixed to the body portion or the lid member, and a locking strap provided with an engagement member. The latch assembly comprises a casing and a lock bolt reciprocating between locked and unlocked positions. The lock bolt engages the engagement member of the locking strap in the locked position and is disengaged from the engagement member in the unlocked position. The latch assembly further comprises an actuator for moving the lock bolt out of engagement with the engagement member, a signal receiver for receiving a wireless signal or an accelerometer for monitoring acceleration of the container, and an electronic control module electrically connected to the signal receiver or the accelerometer for controlling the operation of the actuator in response to the wireless signal or data from the accelerometer.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 20, 2017Publication date: October 19, 2017Inventor: David L. Reeb

Publication number: 20170197787Abstract: A locking device for a container having a hinged lid, comprises a base unit adapted to be fixed to the container and a pivotable unit mounted to the base unit and pivotally movable between open and closed positions. The base unit includes a locking mechanism comprising a casing, a rotatable shaft, a blocking member fixed to the shaft and disposed in the casing, and a rolling member. The pivotable unit is mounted to the shaft of the base unit. The rolling member is provided to move within the casing between a blocking position wherein the rolling member blocks movement of the pivotable unit relative to the casing to prevent unauthorized opening of the lid, and a release position wherein the rolling member moves away from the blocking member to permit the movement of the blocking member relative to the casing thereby permitting opening of the lid.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 28, 2017Publication date: July 13, 2017Inventor: David L. Publication number: 20170190509Abstract: The invention relates to locking devices, more particularly, gravity actuated locking devices, e.g., for waste containers. The locking device is designed to be fixed to a container and contains a gravity operated locking mechanism and a locking unit that couples the gravity operated locking mechanism to a locking bar. The locking bar allows the lid of the container to be blocked or opened depending upon the relative position of the locking bar to the lid. In the blocked position, the locking bar sits over the lid and does not allow it to be opened. In the opened position, the locking bar is removed from the lid and allows the lid to be opened. When in the container is in the upright position, the parts of the locking device cooperate to block the locking bar from being moved from the blocked position. However, when the container is tilted forward, e.g. for emptying the content of the container, gravity, acting on the parts of the locking device, allows the locking bar to be moved to the opened position.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 30, 2016Publication date: July 6, 2017Inventors: David L. Reeb, James L. MARTIN, II
