  • Patent number: 7247263
Abstract: The invention is directed to a system which allows for the rapid application of a water immobilizing dispersion in sufficient quantities to increase the fire protective and wetting characteristics of water. This system also increases the evaporative cooling and quenching effects of water. The primary constituents of the composition of this system are water, purified Attapulgite clay, and an environmentally safe salt, e.g., magnesium sulfate.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 29, 2003
Date of Patent: July 24, 2007
    Assignee: ITC Minerals & Chemicals
Inventors: Dennis C. Parker, Anthony W. Carignano, David L. Ruff, Robert J. Purcell

  • Patent number: 4313997
Abstract: Perlite board made from expanded perlite and a binder having the property of permanent tackiness in the dry state. The board may be made by expanding the perlite, adding a tacky resin emulsion to the perlite, drying the mixture and forming it into a board-like product.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 14, 1980
Date of Patent: February 2, 1982
    Assignee: Grefco, Inc.
Inventors: David L. Ruff, Narikottile G. Nath
  • Patent number: 4302344
Abstract: Fire resistant, loose-fill, thermal insulation made of a mixture of particulate expanded perlite and cellulose fiber. The mixture is rendered non-settling and resistant to separation by applying a permanently tacky material to the particulate expanded perlite.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 22, 1980
Date of Patent: November 24, 1981
    Assignee: Grefco, Inc.
Inventors: David L. Ruff, N. Gokul Nath
  • Patent number: 4212755
Abstract: Thermal insulation of particulate expanded perlite that forms a low density, settle-resistant mass due to the coating of the perlite particles with a material rendering the individual particles slightly tacky.

  • Patent number: 4142969
Abstract: This invention relates to a composition and method of removing oleaginous compounds from aqueous systems, both fresh and salt, by employing a composition comprising a volcanic glass and a fibrous material.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 12, 1975
Date of Patent: March 6, 1979
Inventors: Richard S. Funk, Donald W. Mogg, David L. Ruff
  • Patent number: 4067155
Abstract: A system for joining and adhering a pair of abutting panels to a rigid substrate and providing a seal against thermal and moisture transfer. The system is comprised of an elongated receptacle member with a base and a pair of spaced vertical elements extending upwardly from the base and forming a channel, to be placed under and between edges of the panels to be joined. The receptacle member is firmly attached to the rigid substrate by fastening means passed through the base. The adjacent side walls of the vertical elements include a plurality of vertically spaced, downwardly angled teeth projecting inwardly towards the center of the channel. An elongated resilient insert member includes a cap and a projection extending downwardly from said cap.

  • Patent number: 4063395
Abstract: A roofing system comprising a fire resistant rigid class A fire rated board as a substrate having bonded thereto a sheet of foamed, insulating resin and having a tough weather resistant membrane bonded to the upper surface. A ledge of substrate about 1/2 inch wide protrudes beyond the formed sheet to enable the composite to be fastened to a steel roof or the like by mechanical fasteners. The channel formed by the abutting roofing panels is filled with insulating foam and covered with a membrane strip which is attached at its edges to the membrane surface of the roofing panel.

  • Patent number: 4059933
Abstract: Apparatus for sealingly joining sheets of construction material laid with edges abutting over an underlying frame and having edges rabbeted to form a joint channel including a pad for lying in the channel, a cap permanently adhered to the pad member and having edges extending past the pad for sealingly contacting the unrabbeted sheet surfaces, a metal strip embedded in the pad, and screws for securing the metal strip to the frame to capture the rabbeted surfaces of the sheets.

  • Patent number: 3978264
Abstract: When a porous substrate such as perlite insulation board is surfaced with a foamed polymer layer formed in place from liquid components, the liquid components will often partially penetrate the surface, resulting in loss of materials and uneven foaming. A barrier coating which can prevent penetration is provided by applying to the porous substrate an aqueous mix of a thermosetting resin which cures through methylol groups, such as urea formaldehyde, with a component containing a hydroxyl group, such as starch, cereal flour, or the like. When the barrier coating is dried, a water insoluble cross-linked surface is formed which is impenetrable to foam constituents. A greater foam thickness is obtained for a given amount of foamable material and a more uniform thickness also results.
