    Abstract: A sorting system for separating metals from nonmetals in an automobile recycling process. The system includes a belt conveyor, a sensor assembly under the conveyor, a deflector assembly at the end of the conveyor, and a microprocessor for controlling the deflector assembly in response to the sensor assembly. The sensor assembly includes a plurality of sensors arranged transversely across the conveyor and each capable of detecting metal. The microprocessor generates selectively actuates fingers in the deflector assembly to deflect the metals from the material stream.
