    Abstract: A display system for sensing a finger of a user applied to the display system includes a display panel; a sensor for sensing the finger; a sensing light source configured to emit a first light having a first wavelength W1; and a reflective polarizer disposed between the display panel and the sensor. For a substantially normally incident light, an optical transmittance of the reflective polarizer versus wavelength for a first polarization state has a band edge such that for a first wavelength range extending from a smaller wavelength L1 to a greater wavelength L2 and including W1, where 30 nm?L2?L1?50 nm and L1 is greater than and within about 20 nm of a wavelength L3 corresponding to an optical transmittance of about 50% along the band edge, the optical transmittance has an average of greater than about 75%.

    Abstract: An apparatus for determining the stiffness of mail pieces includes a bar or similar deflector for contacting a mail piece conveyed past the bar by a conveyor system, and vibrates when in contact with a passing mail piece, either due to the impact of the mail piece or by the action of a device which causes the deflector to vibrate before the mail piece hits it. A sensor measures a parameter indicative of change in the vibrations of the deflector and generates a signal indicative of the measured parameter. A processor, e.g. programmable controller or circuit, receives the signal from the sensor and determines a stiffness value for the mail piece based on decay in vibrations of the deflector caused by contact with the mail piece.

    Abstract: An inexpensive, reliable telephone answering device screens out undesirable calls, screens the calls that are dialed out and inhibits preprogrammed call prefixes from being dialed, adds the "hold" function and a simulated call transfer function to all telephones (activated by depressing a TOUCH TONE key on a standard telephone set), provides a way to use the telephones in the home as an intercom system, and provides other advanced PBX functions at low cost in a home or small business environment. A power off failsafe feature prevents power loss to the device from interrupting normal telephone operation. Several caller access codes and several dial inhibit codes can be programmed from a conventional unmodified subscriber Touch Tone telephone set, and a personal access code prevents system programming from being changed by unauthorized persons or accidentally.
