Publication number: 20240410777Abstract: An apparatus configured to be removably attached to a tire/hub assembly of a vehicle via lug nuts of the tire/hub assembly is used to determine imbalance forces of the tire/hub assembly during motion of the vehicle. The apparatus includes a disk and a plurality of cup-shaped objects fixed at one end to the disk and extending perpendicularly outward from the disk. The plurality of cup-shaped objects are arranged a fixed radial distance from a radial center of the disk in a pattern that matches the lug nuts of the tire/hub assembly. The apparatus is mounted to the vehicle's tire/hub assembly by fitting the plurality of cup-shaped objects over the lug nuts of the tire/hub assembly. The apparatus further includes one or more inertial measurement units (IMU's) mounted to the disk to measure parameters that are used for calculating the imbalance forces during motion of the vehicle.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 10, 2024Publication date: December 12, 2024Inventors: Eric L. Method for measuring imbalance forces of a tire/hub assembly of vehicle during motion of the vehicle
Patent number: 11982586Abstract: A method is provided for collecting measurement parameters related to imbalance forces of a tire/hub assembly of a vehicle during motion of the vehicle. An apparatus is removably attached to the tire/hub assembly of the vehicle via lug nuts of the tire/hub assembly. The apparatus includes a disk, a plurality of cup-shaped objects, and one or more inertial measurement units (IMU's) mounted to the disk. Each of the cup-shaped objects are rigidly fixed at one end to the disk and extend perpendicularly outward from the disk. The plurality of cup-shaped objects are arranged a fixed radial distance from a radial center of the disk in a pattern that matches the lug nuts of the tire/hub assembly. The one or more inertial measurement units (IMU's) are mounted to the disk and configured to measure parameters that are used for calculating the imbalance forces during motion of the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 2022Date of Patent: May 14, 2024Assignee: NVH TECHNOLOGY LLCInventors: Eric L. Patent number: 11480491Abstract: A method is disclosed for determining vibrational anomalies of a vehicle. An object is removably attached to a wheel of the vehicle in a manner that inhibits the object from coming off of the vehicle when the vehicle is in operation. The object includes one or more inertial measurement units (IMU's) mounted to the object and configured to measure parameters that are used for calculating the vibrational anomalies when the vehicle is in operation. Motion data captured by the one or more IMU's is collected. The collected motion data is processed to determine the presence of one or more vibrational anomalies of the vehicle. A recommended corrective action to be taken is determined when the result of the processed data indicates the presence of one or more vibrational anomalies of the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2022Date of Patent: October 25, 2022Assignee: BALANCED ENGINEERING SOLUTION, LLCInventors: Eric L. Publication number: 20180035837Abstract: A work area illuminating and flexible curtain. The curtain has a length and a height and spaced apart rows of lights extending along the length and/or height of the curtain. The spaced apart rows of lights may extend along the length and/or height such that when illuminated, the emitted incident light rays shine generally parallel to a ground or floor surface of the work area. This may allow the emitted light rays to better illuminate the front, rear, side, and/or bottom surfaces of an object in the work area which may be adjacent to and/or at least in part enclosed by the curtain.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 11, 2017Publication date: February 8, 2018Inventor: David M. Patent number: 7328614Abstract: A method for providing a centering check for a rotating body mounted on a wheel balancer which is based on measuring at least one imbalance parameter or tire runout of the rotating body. The rotating body is mounted on a spindle of the wheel balancer and an imbalance parameter or tire runout measurement taken. The mounting of the rotating body on the spindle is then altered, and a second measurement of the imbalance parameter or tire runout is taken. A processor in the wheel balancer utilizes the first and second measurements together with a threshold to provide an indication of off-center mounting of the rotating body one the spindle.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 2005Date of Patent: February 12, 2008Assignee: Hunter Engineering CompanyInventors: Michael D. Gerdes, Michael W. Douglas, David M. Scribner, Joel Clasquin, William B. Feero

Patent number: 6952964Abstract: A method for providing a centering check for a rotating body mounted on a wheel balancer based on measuring at least one imbalance parameter and for determining weight display thresholds for static and dynamic imbalance correction weights which vary with parameters of the wheel and/or tire. The rotating body is mounted on a spindle of the wheel balancer and an imbalance parameter or runout measurement taken. The mounting of the rotating body on the spindle is then altered, and a second measurement of the imbalance parameter or runout is taken. A processor in the wheel balancer determines if the difference between the first and second measurements exceeds a predetermined threshold value, indicative of off-center mounting of the rotating body one the spindle. Upon centered mounting of the rotating body, imbalance measurements are acquired, and required correction weights are displayed to an operator if they exceed an identified imbalance threshold level.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2003Date of Patent: October 11, 2005Assignee: Hunter Engineering CompanyInventors: Michael D. Gerdes, Michael W. Douglas, David M. Scribner, Joel Clasquin, William B. Feero

Patent number: 6581463Abstract: A method of matching a tire to a wheel rim of a wheel to compensate for wheel rim run-out and tire force variations includes the steps of mounting a bare wheel on a spindle of a balancer and measuring the rim run-out, said wheel rim having a bead seat, mounting a tire on the wheel to form a wheel/tire assembly, mounting the wheel/tire assembly on the spindle and measuring tire force variation, determining a desired change in wheel rim run-out to reduce the tire force variation, removing the tire from the wheel, adding a shim to the bead seat of the wheel rim, the shim being selected to correspond to the desired change in wheel rim run-out, and remounting the tire on the wheel. The wheel shim is preferably elongate and has a width sized to fit in the bead seat of the wheel rim, the thickness of the wheel shim being substantially less than the width of the wheel shim, and the length of the wheel shim being substantially greater than the width of the wheel shim.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2000Date of Patent: June 24, 2003Assignee: Hunter Engineering Co.Inventors: Nicholas J.
