The methods include applying to a skin site of the subject a topical composition that includes a vasodilation agent and an anesthetic agent in a manner sufficient for locally increasing arterial diameter and providing local anesthesia in the subject. In some embodiments, the method includes inserting a cannula into an artery at the skin site of the subject. Also provided are topical compositions that find use in performing the subject methods.
