  • Publication number: 20110010640
Abstract: A leader of a group can specify how content is to be displayed to a group of users. One of these users can specify different instructions regarding the display of the content. The system can then display the content to the user, using either (or both) of the leader's instructions and the user's specific instructions. Using these various independent instructions, the system can automatically change the way the content is displayed to a group of users.

  • Publication number: 20100328106
Abstract: A warning system is provided, which is particularly useful as a person overboard warning system. The system comprises a trigger part, worn by a crew member, which emits a signal on immersion in water. This is received by a receiver part on the vessel and automatically causes a transmitter part, also on the vessel, to send a further warning signal to one or more other locations remote from the vessel. These remote locations may be other vessels or land based sites, for instance operated by the coastguard or other rescue agencies. The automatic nature of the onward transmission of the signal received by the vessel makes the system particularly suited to single handed sailors.

  • Publication number: 20100162335
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for controlling a network-connected device in one peer network from an infrared (IR) device connected to another peer network is disclosed. Regardless of underlying communication protocols used in peer networks, the IR device in a peer network can request a transfer of data or control to a networked device in another peer network. Communication compatibility among the two peer networks are maintained by utilizing a set-top box in each peer network configured to communicate with another set-top box using a transport control protocol (TCP), which may be different from underlying protocols (e.g. X.25, IrDA) between the set-top box and locally connected devices to the set-top box. The set-top box may utilize an intelligent routing scheme based on a packet header and/or payload content examination to route the transfer of data to a “most-appropriate” electronic device connected to the set-top box.

  • Publication number: 20070252045
Abstract: A self-transpiring hot skin for a hypersonic or reusable space vehicle that can provide protection to the vehicle during short periods of abnormally high heat flux (either planned in the flight profile or an off-nominal event). The hot skin includes a ceramic composite structure having an internal cavity that is coupled either to the insulating layer or directly to the support structure of the hypersonic vehicle. The internal cavity includes a material system that vaporizes, sublimes or decomposes into a gas when the temperature exceeds the upper temperature capability of the composite material. The gas transpires through the outer layer of the composite material to provide cooling to the outer layer below the upper temperature capability. Cooling may occur both by conduction of heat from the composite material to the transpiring gas and by the interaction of the transpiring gas with the boundary layer of hypersonic flow over the outer surface, leading to a reduction of the heat flux entering the surface.

  • Publication number: 20070105099
Abstract: The present invention provides methods, kits and compositions for high fidelity nucleic acid amplification reactions of target nucleic acids such that specific amplification products that incorporate non-standard bases are produced. The amplification reactions can either be linear or exponential. In some embodiments, the fidelity of the amplification reaction is high enough such that a majority of the amplification products maintain non-standard bases at specific sites designated by the user after a specified number of amplification cycles. In some embodiments, the ratio of non-standard nucleoside triphosphates is greater than the amount of standard nucleoside triphosphates initially present in the reaction mixture.

  • Publication number: 20070087361
Abstract: Solid support assays using non-standard bases are described. A capture oligonucleotide comprising a molecular recognition sequence is attached to a solid support and hybridized with a target. In some instances, the molecular recognition sequence includes one or more non-standard bases and hybridizes to a complementary tagging sequence of the target oligonucleotide. In other instances, incorporation of a non-standard base (e.g., via PCR or ligation) is used in the assay.

  • Publication number: 20070031885
Abstract: Assays using non-natural bases are described. In one embodiment, the method involves contacting a sample suspected of containing the target nucleic acid with a polymerase and first and second primers; amplifying the target nucleic acid, if present in the sample, by PCR using the first and second primers to generate an amplification product having a double-stranded region and a single-stranded region that comprises the non-natural base; contacting the sample with a reporter comprising a label and a non-natural base that is complementary to the non-natural base of the single-stranded region; annealing at least a portion of the reporter to the single-stranded region of the amplification product; and correlating a signal of the label with the presence of the target nucleic acid in the sample. The invention also provides corresponding kits for use in detecting target nucleic acids in a sample.

  • Patent number: 7088463
Abstract: A method of sending binary data over an image data channel. The binary data is encoded into an encoded linear matrix image, and the encoded linear matrix image is transmitted over the image data channel. The received linear matrix image is decoded to recover the binary data. The encoding uses encoding parameters which are adapted for encoding the binary data into an encoded matrix image. The encoding parameters are defined in such a manner that a transformed matrix image produced by transmitting the encoded linear matrix image over the image-transforming channel is reconstructable into the encoded linear matrix image. The binary data is encoded into the encoded linear matrix image according to the encoding parameters. In order to recover the binary data from the received matrix image, the decoding analyzes a header section of the received linear matrix image to determine image-distortion characteristics of the image data channel.

  • Publication number: 20060157563
Abstract: A dual-interface (contact and contactless) “smart card” which supports (transportation-related) functions. The smart card acts as a user ID which tracks stored value, transit or taxicab fare, parking, car sharing or rental car membership/loyalty. The smart card tracks these functions for users as a means of saving money. The smart card can also be used to control access to a vehicle with multiple authorized users (either rental or fractional lease), manage automobile insurance information and driver-specific settings. These functions reduce an organizational need and help keeps users transportation records up to date.
