Patent number: 7668696Abstract: A system that monitors the health of a computer system is presented. During operation, the system receives a first-difference function for the variance of a time series for a monitored telemetry variable within the computer system. The system then determines whether the first-difference function indicates that the computer system is at the onset of degradation. If so, the system performs a remedial action.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2007Date of Patent: February 23, 2010Assignee: Sun Microsystems, Inc.Inventors: Kenny C. Gross, David McElfresh, Dan Vacar

Publication number: 20070208538Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that tests the quality and/or the reliability of a component. During operation, the system applies test conditions to a plurality of specimens of the component. While applying the test conditions, the system measures the same variable from each of the plurality of specimens. Next, the system computes a running average of the measured variable across the plurality of specimens. The system then computes residuals between the measured variable for each specimen and the running average. The system next determines from the residuals whether the associated specimens are degraded.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 6, 2006Publication date: September 6, 2007Inventors: Kenny Gross, Dan Vacar, Leoncio Lopez, David McElfresh

Publication number: 20060282705Abstract: A system that detects the onset of degradation for interconnections in a component within a computer system. During operation, the system monitors inferential variables associated with the interconnections during operation of the computer system. Next, the system determines a present state of the component from the monitored inferential variables. The system then compares the present state of the component with an initial state of the component. If the comparison indicates that the interconnections in the component have reached or will reach a limited operating state (LOS), the system performs a remedial action.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 21, 2006Publication date: December 14, 2006Inventors: Leoncio Lopez, David McElfresh, Dan Vacar, Kenny Gross

Patent number: 6843552Abstract: A printhead assembly includes a carrier having a first side and a second side contiguous with the first side, a plurality of printhead dies each mounted on the first side of the carrier, an electrical circuit including a first portion disposed on the first side of the carrier and a second portion disposed on the second side of the carrier, and a plurality of electrical connectors each electrically coupled to the first portion of the electrical circuit and one of the printhead dies. The electrical circuit has a plurality of openings defined in the first portion thereof such that each of the openings are sized to accommodate one of the printhead dies, and has a first side facing the carrier and a second side opposite the first side thereof such that each of the electrical connectors are electrically coupled to the second side of the electrical circuit and one of the printhead dies.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 2003Date of Patent: January 18, 2005Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: David McElfresh, Noah Carl Lassar, Mohammad Akhavain, Brian J. Keefe, Joseph E. Scheffelin, Janis Horvath, Dale Dean Timm, Jr.

Patent number: 6719398Abstract: An inkjet printer includes a printhead having a plurality of ink orifices formed therein. During printing, ink drops are ejected through the ink orifices into a print zone between the printhead and a print medium with an intended ink drop trajectory toward the print medium. An air movement system directs an air stream to the print zone substantially parallel to the intended ink drop trajectory as the ink drops are ejected during printing so as to affect air currents acting on the ink drops during printing and prevent print defects caused by the air currents. The air stream, however, does not disrupt the intended trajectory of the ink drops during printing.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 2000Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Assignee: Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Inventors: David McElfresh, Satya Prakash, Naoto Kawamura

Patent number: 6409307Abstract: An inkjet printhead assembly includes a substrate having a non-planar surface and a plurality of adhesive quantities each disposed on the non-planar surface of the substrate. As such, a plurality of printhead dies are each adhered to the non-planar surface of the substrate by one of the adhesive quantities. A thickness of at least one of the adhesive quantities varies from the thickness of another of the adhesive quantities such that the thickness of the adhesive quantities compensates for the non-planar surface of the substrate. Thus, the adhesive quantities support the printhead dies and establish a substantially coplanar relationship among the printhead dies.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2001Date of Patent: June 25, 2002Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Mohammad Akhavain, Robert-Scott Melendrino Lopez, Dale Dean Timm, Jr., Janis Horvath, Noah Carl Lassar, David McElfresh, Brian J.
