  • Patent number: 9874064
Abstract: A system, in certain embodiments, includes an accumulator. The accumulator includes a first cylinder configured to receive a fluid within an internal volume of the first cylinder. The accumulator also includes a piston configured to move axially within the first cylinder. Axial movement of the piston within the first cylinder adjusts the internal volume of the first cylinder. The accumulator further includes a plurality of shape memory alloy wires configured to cause the axial movement of the piston within the first cylinder.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: January 23, 2018
    Assignee: University of Houston

  • Publication number: 20080099701
Abstract: A hydraulic blowout preventer operator comprises a piston rod having one end coupled to a closure member. The operator further comprises an operator housing having one end coupled to a bonnet and a second end coupled to a head. The piston rod extends through the bonnet into the operator housing where it is coupled to a piston that is disposed within the operator housing. The piston comprises a body and a flange. A flange seal is disposed on the flange and is sealingly engaged with the operator housing. A body seal is disposed on the body and is sealingly engaged with the operator housing. The flange seal has a sealing diameter greater than a sealing diameter of the body seal.

  • Publication number: 20060076526
Abstract: An anodic sacrificial seal element is installed at vulnerable regions of a blowout preventer. A zinc cylinder, for example, is included at the well-bore pressure side of a bonnet which seals around a rod as it extends through a bonnet which joins an actuator to the body of the BOP. Similarly, a zinc O-ring may be used in a seal groove provided between the bonnet and the body of the BOP. In this way, the high electropotential of the material from which the additional seal element is made is oxidized first, before any attack on the BOP material, thereby increasing the time period between maintenance events on the BOP.

  • Publication number: 20050006087
Abstract: A ram type blowout preventer includes variable ram packers for sealing about tubulars of different outside diameters in the bore of the preventer housing or about a single tubular having a variable outside diameter. Each ram packer includes a body of elastomeric material formed about vertical ribs to conform to tubular having variable OD within a certain range.

  • Patent number: 6164619
Abstract: A shuttle valve assembly in a ram-type BOP selectively connects the volume behind the rams to the more highly pressurized wellbore volume adjacent to the rams (either above or below the rams). The connection made is free flowing in both directions (no check valves) allowing for evacuation and fluctuations with changes in wellbore pressure.
