The switch fabric may have a distributed control plane. The network management module is configured to receive a request regarding status information for a certain set of network resources identified with a virtual or logical identifier. The network management module is configured to generate and send a corresponding query for status information to a set of physical elements that encompass and may be larger than the certain set of network resources and collect responses to that query. The network management module is configured to construct a response to the request from the status information in the collected responses to the query. The constructed response includes only information related to the original request.
