Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for producing tradeable environmental attributes such as carbon offsets from the physical movements of users. The solution incorporates the use of a modal shift optimization application executed on a user's device. The application locates alternative transport options, and monitors the user's physical movements as the user travels to the destination using one of the alternative transport options. A carbon offset system receives the user's trip data and calculates project greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the user's journey. The carbon offset system also calculates baseline GHG emissions for a baseline transport option. The carbon offset system obtains data on the GHG emissions avoided by determining a difference between the baseline and project emissions and subtracting for leakage; the GHG emissions avoided can be validated and verified for the production of carbon offsets.

Abstract: System and methods for producing verifiable environmental attributes for a transaction on an online platform, by calculating item project emissions for a selected item and item baseline emissions for a substitute item, calculating project and baseline final delivery transport emissions to the user's specified destination, and extracting net emissions reductions based on the baseline and project emissions. The net emissions reductions are communicated to a system for aggregation with net emissions reductions from other transactions, and aggregated net emissions reductions are delivered to an independent system for validation and verification. Ownership of net emissions reductions may be assigned to the platform provider.
