    Abstract: A clamping load distributor disposed and connecting between a fuel injector body and a clamping device. The clamping load distributor functions as an intermediary to transmit the static clamping load from the clamping device to the fuel injector body. The clamping load distributor includes a cylindrically shaped main body having a bore extending therethrough between an upper surface and a lower surface. The upper surface of the main body being adapted for receiving the clamping load from a clamping device. The lower surface having at least one portion normally contacting the deck of the fuel injector body. The clamping device engages the upper surface of the clamping load distributor at a position axially aligned with a portion of the lower surface that normally does not contact the fuel injector body. The geometric relationship of the clamping load distributor functions to more uniformly distribute the static clamping load across the fuel injector body.

    Abstract: A sliding friction- and wear-resistant elephant's foot or swivel pad adjusting screw assembly for contacting an actuating member interface in an internal combustion engine is provided to transmit arcuate motion into reciprocal motion. The assembly includes a metal screw element configured to move along an arcuate path in a correspondingly configured socket in a ceramic pad element. A retainer element secures the pad element to the screw element loosely to allow this relative motion. The ceramic pad element includes a planar contact face for contacting a corresponding planar contact surface on an internal combustion engine actuating member, such as a valve, a valve crosshead or a unit fuel injector.

    Abstract: A ceramic-metal composite structure which minimizes tensile ceramic loads and accommodates differences in thermal expansion characteristics between a metal member and a ceramic member without reliance on precise feature control for either member. The composite includes a mechanical retainer which allows a loose fitting relationship between the metal and ceramic members. The ceramic member is secured within a receiving bore in the metal member by the retainer in a manner which eliminates the need for precise machining of the ceramic and metal members. The metal member may be configured to accept either an internal or an external mechanical retainer element. The composite ceramic-metal structure of the present invention finds particular utility in forming a durable wear-resistant interface in internal combustion engine actuator or actuating components, such as compression brake master pistons.

    Abstract: A ball link assembly in which a link member has a semi-spherical cavity formed in each end for rotatably receiving a respective complementary spherical bearing ball formed, preferably, of a ceramic material. Each ball is freely retained by a ball retainer formed of spring steel, the ball retainer extending just over the equator of the ball and mounting to the link by a sideways snap-on action. In one form, the link is designed to accommodate an existing link retainer which is fixed internally of the injector assembly, while in a second form the link assembly is retained by a link retainer which is externally tethered.

    Abstract: An improved high pressure fuel injector for internal combustion engines of the type having a plunger assembly, with a plurality of plungers, that is mounted within a central bore within the body of the fuel injector for reciprocal movement, the plunger assembly having an upper plunger and a lower plunger mounted for reciprocal motion within the central bore and a variable volume injection chamber in said lower end of the central bore between the injection orifice and a bottom end of the lower plunger. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the problem of large quantities of air being drawn into the injector from the combustion chamber during the retraction stroke injection stroke is avoided by limiting the return stroke of the lower plunger to a distance that is significantly less than that of the stroke of the upper plunger of the plunger assembly.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to open nozzle type unit fuel injectors, and more specifically to an improved lower plunger and cup design of an open nozzle unit injector to minimize trapped volume and reduce unburned hydrocarbons in vehicle emissions. The lower plunger includes at least a major and a minor diameter sections with the minor diameter section extending within a bore of said cup at least partially between the fully advanced and retracted positions of the plunger. Moreover, the labyrinth flow area between the cup bore and the minor diameter section of the plunger is designed to reduce the trapped volume of fuel that results in the advanced plunger position while reducing sensitivity to fuel metering in the retracted plunger position. In one embodiment, the cup bore and minor diameter section are stepped. In another, both the bore and the minor diameter section are tapered. In yet another embodiment, only the cup bore is modified.
