Tickets are pre-staged from a ticket storage bin to a staging point to reduce print-cycle time. Ticket errors can be corrected and changes can be made by re-inserting the old ticket into the machine, reading the information that had been magnetically recorded on the old ticket and either printing a new ticket or over-printing the old ticket. If a new ticket is printed, the old ticket is deposited in a safe receptacle inside the machine.

The ticket blanks are prefed from the storage bins along separate guide paths to separate staging areas prior to these paths joining to form a common path. The magnetic read/write head and the printer are located along this common path.

A gap is maintained between the platen and the print head except when a ticket is present for printing. A ticket is fed toward the gap and the feeding of the ticket is sensed. At a timed interval after sensing the feeding of the ticket, the print head is moved toward the platen by a stepper motor so that the ticket is engaged between the print head and the platen.

    Abstract: A dual mode electrically operated servo-actuator with a motorized speed reducer rotating a pair of spaced discs each having a pair of common spiral cam tracks. A sliding carrier block disposed between the discs has cam followers separately engaging the track. A bell crank is pivoted on the carrier block for attachment to a load function. In the rotary mid-position, the carrier block is centered and the servo motor is not used to enable a fixed position of the bell crank pivot. In a first mode function the motor is driven to rotate the cam for modulation about positions between the mid-position and fully clockwise position. In a second mode function the motor is driven to rotate the cam for modulation about positions between the mid-position and the fully counter-clockwise position. In a throttle actuator application the first mode is cruise control and the second mode is traction control, with the mid-position comprising normal driver operation of the throttle.

    Abstract: A servo-actuator has a motor driven input pinion engaging a driven gear clutched to an output pinion. The driven gear has an internally notched hub and the output pinion has a central core with a tapered pin slidable therein. Spherical cams are slidably received in a cross hole and are moved outward to lock the output pinions to the hub when a solenoid is energized, to move the tapered pin into contact with the cam members. The angle of the notch and the pin taper are chosen to effect a positive de-energization force on the pin for facilitating disengagement.

    Abstract: The contact area between a first phase of a multi-phase system and a liquid second phase of the system is increased by effecting transient electrical discharges between electrodes immersed in the liquid second phase or in a volume of liquid in acoustic communication with the liquid second phase. The first phase can be in the form of a particulate solid, a gas, or a liquid of lower density than that of the second phase. The first phase is mingled with the second phase by a bubbling technique where the first phase has a lower density than the second phase. The hydraulic shock waves produced by the electrical discharges disperse the bubbles or particles of the first phase in the liquid second phase and thus increase the contact area between the phases.

    Abstract: A method of disrupting vapor films formed in film boiling in boilers, in which method transient electrical discharges are effected either in the boiler liquid or in a body of liquid in acoustic communication with the boiler liquid. The electrical discharges are effected at one or more selected locations in the boiler to produce shock waves which act on surfaces of the boiler liquid space where vapor films are to be disrupted. By disrupting such vapor films there is enabled an improvement in the heat transfer rates per unit area across the interface between the fire space and the liquid space of a boiler. There are also disclosed various arrangements in boilers for generating these shock waves. Electrical discharges may be effected between a pair of electrodes mounted in the boiler or between an electrode and an adjacent wall of the boiler, and several mounting configurations for electrodes in boilers are described.
