Abstract: Inhibitors for matrix metalloproteases, pharmaceutical compositions containing them, and a process for using them to treat a variety of physiological conditions. The compounds of the invention have the generalized formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents C.sub.6 -C.sub.12 alkyl; C.sub.5 -C.sub.12 alkoxy; C.sub.5 -C.sub.12 alkylthio; a polyether of formula R.sup.2 O(C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O).sub.a -- in which a is 1 or 2 and R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, phenyl, or benzyl; and substituted alkynyl of formula R.sup.3 (CH.sub.2).sub.b --C.tbd.C--; in which b is 1-10 and R.sup.3 is H--, HO--, or R.sup.4 O-- in which R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl, phenyl, or benzyl. The alkyl, phenyl, and benzyl portions of R.sup.1 may bear at least one pharmaceutically-acceptable substituent. The subscript n is 2-4. R.sup.

Abstract: Aminomethyl oxooxazolidinyl ethenylbenzene derivatives, including the nitriles, sulfoxides, acetamides and nitro compounds, such as l-N-[3-[4-(E-1-methyl-2-cyanoethenyl)phenyl]-2-oxooxazolidin-5-ylmethyl]ac etamide, possess useful antibacterial activity.

Abstract: Chiral glycidyl azides, such as (2S)-glycidyl azide, are prepared, and they are useful as intermediates to prepare optically active compounds, particularly optically active, anti-bacterial oxazolidinones.

Abstract: Compounds having a quinodimethane or a 7,8-dihydroquinodimethane nucleus and four substituted phosphinyl groups at the 7- and 8-positions are disclosed. A process for preparing the specified compounds is also disclosed.

Abstract: Certain 4a-aryl-trans-decahydroisoquinolines are useful as analgesics. Exemplary is N-cyclopropylmethyl-4a-m-hydroxyphenyl-trans-decahydroisoquinoline.

Abstract: Process for preparing the substituted phosphonoalkanoic acid of the formula ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.1 is alkyl of 1-8 carbon atoms, aralkyl of 7-10 carbon atoms, phenyl, or substituted phenyl of 6-10 carbon atoms;R.sup.2 is H, hydrocarbyl of 1-18 carbon atoms, or substituted hydrocarbyl of 1-18 carbon atoms, wherein in said hydrocarbyl groups the carbon atom attached to the ##STR2## moiety is substituted with two or three hydrogen atoms or is a carbon atom of an aromatic ring; andY is oxygen or sulfur,which process comprises contacting and reacting, at a temperature of about -70.degree. C. to about 125.degree. C., a pressure of about 1-100 atmospheres (0.1-10 MPa), and for a time sufficient to effect reaction, the phosphite ester of the formula ##STR3## wherein R.sup.1 and Y are as defined above, with the .alpha.-halocarboxylic acid of the formula R.sup.2 CHXCO.sub.2 H, wherein X is Cl, Br, or I and R.sup.
