  • Patent number: 11308194
Abstract: The technology disclosed herein provides a method to control the resources used in a device. An implementation of such a method includes generating a device configuration ledger block based on initial assembly of components of a storage device, storing the device configuration ledger block on a node of a distributed ledger, detecting an activation of the device; in response to detecting the activation of the device, generating a current distributed ledger block based on current assembly of components of the storage device, comparing the current distributed ledger block with the device configuration ledger block, and in response to determining that the current distributed ledger block does not match with the device configuration ledger block disabling the operation of the device.

  • Patent number: 10776327
Abstract: A method includes generating a plurality of blocks of a block chain wherein the plurality of blocks is associated with components of a storage device. The plurality of blocks is generated by a device other than the storage device when the components are manufactured. The method further includes storing a copy of a ledger associated with the generated blocks on the storage device when the storage device comprises computing power sufficient to generate blocks of a block chain. The method also includes generating additional blocks of the block chain. The additional blocks of the block chain are associated with additional components of the storage device when the additional components are manufactured. The additional blocks are generated independently by the device and by the storage device and wherein respective ledgers are updated.

  • Patent number: 9729534
Abstract: Apparatus and method for in situ authentication and diagnostic repair of a data storage device in a multi-device user environment. In accordance with some embodiments, the method includes detecting an error condition associated with a selected data storage device in the multi-device user environment. A first level of user authentication is established by providing a challenge value generated by the selected data storage device to a remote device over a network associated with the selected data storage device. A first diagnostic tool stored on the selected data storage device is executed responsive to receipt of the first level of user authentication. A second level of user authentication is established by providing a second challenge value generated by the selected data storage device to the remote device. An output from the first diagnostic tool is used to execute a second diagnostic tool stored on the selected data storage device.

  • Patent number: 9535676
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to remote feature activation. In an embodiment, a device may be manufactured having firmware configured to implement multiple unique features on the device. Features may be enabled and disabled on the device later or at a remote location. Enabled features may allow the device to perform corresponding functions, and disabled features may not allow the device to perform corresponding functions. Remote feature activation may include exchanging security information between an activation entity and the device.
