Patent number: 6054915Abstract: A fuseblock is compact, and electrically conductive components of the fuseblock do not extend beyond a length of a fuse in the fuseblock. The fuseblock can be assembled easily and quickly without tools, and can be easily configured in different ways using the same components. The fuseblock can be snapped onto a mounting rail using mounting projections that are integral with the fuseblock. The fuseblock can include wire end connectors that each have two or more openings for receiving wire ends. The fuseblock also effectively conceals live electrical contacts from accidental touch when the fuseblock is closed and operational, and also when the fuseblock is opened to replace or inspect the fuse, thereby preventing a person servicing the fuseblock from accidentally receiving an electrical shock.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1998Date of Patent: April 25, 2000Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: Daniel Eugene Rowton, David R. Marach, Sean V. Ciesielka

Patent number: 5515023Abstract: An overcurrent protection module includes a base unit and a removable fuse holder. The base unit is mountable on a panel or a DIN rail so that a containing space for the fuse holder stands perpendicular to a plane of the panel or the DIN rail, and in line with a conventional wiring orientation. The fuse holder includes at least three fuse slots arranged in a single plane, so that in a position inserted in the base unit, the fuse slots are perpendicular to the plane of the panel or DIN rail. Line terminals are singularly located on a first side wall of the base unit and load terminals are singularly located on a second side wall, opposite to the first side wall. The overcurrent protection module according to the invention is simpler to mount and requires less surface mounting space than a conventional fuse block. The overcurrent protection module also provides protection from shock hazard by shielding an operator from contact with live terminals or fuses.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1994Date of Patent: May 7, 1996Assignee: Cooper IndustriesInventors: David R. Patent number: 5355274Abstract: A fused disconnect device constructed according to the present invention comprises a housing, a line side terminal, a load side terminal, a protection fuse holder assembly removably installed in a cavity of said housing, and a separate alarm fuse removably installed in said housing. The alarm fuse may remain installed in the housing regardless of the presence of the protection fuse holder assembly, so that an alarm will be generated whenever the inventive device has interrupted power to the load. In a first embodiment of the invention, the disconnect device is adapted for front-access mounting in a power distribution panel. In a second embodiment of the invention, the disconnect device is adapted for rear-access mounting in a power distribution panel. A third embodiment is adapted for use in higher-current applications.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 1991Date of Patent: October 11, 1994Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventors: David R. Patent number: 5221218Abstract: A card-edge connector for connecting wiring to electronic circuit cards comprises a generally rectangular housing, one or more removable wire termination blocks, and a cover for retaining the wire termination blocks and for protecting the interior of the connector. A slit-like aperture for receiving a peripheral edge of one or more electronic circuit cards to which wire connections are desired is provided in a first external surface of the housing. The circuit card receptacle has a plurality of contact members for mechanically and electrically engaging contact pads located on the exterior surface of the circuit cards. The inventive connector also has one or more receptacles for receiving the removable wire termination blocks. These receptacles are preferably provided on a different side of the connector housing. Each of the removable wire termination blocks has a plurality of wire retaining terminals to which the external wiring is attached.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1992Date of Patent: June 22, 1993Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventor: David R. Marach

Patent number: 4944691Abstract: A holder for a removable plug-in circuit element is disclosed. The holder comprises an insulated base, an electrical bus member, and a plurality of terminal members which are formed from the same blank of metal as the metal bus member. The bus member comprises a plurality of branches joined to a common trunk with each branch having at its free end an integral terminal. Each terminal member has at one end an electrical terminal and, at an opposite end, an integral terminal which is aligned to the free end of one lateral branch. In one embodiment of the invention, the holder includes an insulated cover which is carried by the base and which has a plurality of apertures which aligned to the terminals of each branch so as to receive the ends of a removable plug-in circuit element therein.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1989Date of Patent: July 31, 1990Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventor: David R. Marach

Patent number: 4872262Abstract: A holder and method of forming a holder for a removable plug-in circuit element is disclosed. The fuse holder comprises an insulated base, an electrical bus member, and a plurality of terminal members which are formed from the same blank of metal as the metal bus member and which were separated from each other after that blank was mounted on the insulated base. The bus member comprises a plurality of branches joined to a common trunk with each branch having at its free end an integral terminal. Each terminal member has at one end an electrical terminal and, at an opposite end, an integral terminal which is aligned to the free end of one lateral branch. In one embodiment of the invention, the holder includes an insulated cover which is carried by the base and which has a plurality of apertures which aligned to the terminals of each branch so as to receive the ends of a removable plug-in circuit element therein.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1988Date of Patent: October 10, 1989Assignee: Cooper Industries, Inc.Inventor: David R. Patent number: 4685028Abstract: The invention relates to a power entry module for supplying power from an outside source to equipment with which the power entry module is in association. The module is made up of a one piece housing divided into at least two compartments with a first compartment having means housed therein for connection to an outside power source. A second compartment includes respective fuse clips for use with different size fuses for routing power from the outside power supply through the fuses and into the equipment requiring the power. A voltage card enables selection of the outside power supply within predetermined ranges and converts the incoming voltage to that required by the equipment depending upon the position of the card. A cover is hinged to the housing and when in closed position with an outside power supply plugged into the power entry module, has means for preventing opening of the cover to prevent access to the fuse compartment to avoid the danger of shock.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1985Date of Patent: August 4, 1987Assignee: Allied CorporationInventors: Robert A. Patent number: 4527849Abstract: Two variations of a simplified structure for retaining a device to a mounting surface are appropriate for use with a disconnect block, or for removably retaining any device to a mounting surface. As a disconnect block, cooperating connector portions in mating surfaces of fixed and removable body portions prevent motion transverse to the mating surfaces. The removable portion is provided with a flexible portion containing projections which mate with apertures in the mounting surface. The flexible portion is pried away from the mounting surface to raise the projections from the holes in the mounting surface and release the removable portion. In a second embodiment, a mounting surface is provided with two facing inverted L-shaped projections, a stop projection, and at least one hole. The device base member includes cooperating projections, and a flexible portion with a projection adapted to engage the hole in the mounting surface.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1983Date of Patent: July 9, 1985Assignee: Allied CorporationInventor: David R. Patent number: 3960435Abstract: A fuse clip which accepts and retains the annularly grooved end cap of a current limiting ferrule cartridge fuse inserted therein, and which rejects the insertion of other classes of ferrule cartridge fuses. The fuse clip of the invention includes a central mounting portion and a pair of arm members extending in like direction from opposite sides of the mounting portion. The arm members include rejection means positioned on each arm member to co-act with the annular groove in the current limiting fuse end cap and allow it to be inserted and retained in the clip. The rejection means prevents the seating of a conventional fuse end cap in the clip and exerts a force on the cap tending to push it out of the clip.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1975Date of Patent: June 1, 1976Assignee: Underwriters Safety Device CompanyInventors: William R.
