  • Patent number: 6672045
Abstract: This invention provides an apparatus and method for splicing together two threadlines in a manufacturing process and, more specifically, to a manually assisted apparatus and method resulting in a knot-induced twist entanglement splice that joins a threadline from a standby spool to the running threadline from an active spool.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 19, 2002
Date of Patent: January 6, 2004
Assignee: E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company
Inventors: Patrick J. Heaney, David R. Roland

  • Patent number: 4665306
Abstract: Apparatus for activating heat shrinkable ribbon on disposable garments and other articles in which the ribbon is absorbent of electromagnetic radiation and is bombarded by infrared rays for a time long enough to activate and shrink the ribbon. Heated convection air may be directed past the infrared radiators toward the ribbon to cool the radiators and maintain a desired spectral distribution of the radiation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 4, 1985
Date of Patent: May 12, 1987
    Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Corporation
Inventors: David R. Roland, Jerry A. Johnston, William S. Pomplun
  • Patent number: 4385224
Abstract: A heat treating roll for heating selected spaced areas of stretched thermoplastic elastomeric material so as to "kill" the elastic properties of the heat treated areas wherein insulated arcuate shoes are disposed in grooves in the roll with an air space between the shoes and the bottoms of the grooves and with the outer surface of the shoes disposed radially outward from the ungrooved surface of the roll so that the insulated shoes are pressed by companion chill roll while the heated surfaces of the roll are not and the elastic material is transferred from the nip between the heated roll and the chill roll to stabilize the elastic/inelastic properties of the heat treated elastomeric ribbons.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 31, 1981
Date of Patent: May 24, 1983
    Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Corporation
Inventors: William C. Kaufman, David R. Roland
  • Patent number: 4371417
Abstract: Apparatus for inserting elastic strips into elastic leg diapers wherein elastic strips are adhesively secured continuously along the crotch area and in relaxed condition along the waist areas including a mechanism for feeding a continuous strip of elastic at a constant rate, a mechanism for feeding a continuous sheet of diaper material at a constant rate, and an oscillating arm for guiding the sheet of diaper material and inducing periodic variations in the velocity or distance of the diaper material with respect to the elastic feeding mechanism, thereby alternately stretching and relaxing predetermined lengths of continuous elastic strips as they are adhesively secured to the diaper material.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 1, 1981
Date of Patent: February 1, 1983
    Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Corporation
Inventors: Richard H. Frick, Randolph J. Hill, David R. Roland
  • Patent number: 4266546
Abstract: A tampon which is designed to be folded, has foldable absorbent material, a fluid pervious outerwrap which is overlapped at its edge and a withdrawal string that encircles the tampon at the overlapped edge of the wrap. After folding, the string and overlapped edge are on the outside surface of the tampon.
    Type: Grant
