  • Patent number: 11944835
Abstract: In embodiments, a Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator (WCD) system includes a support structure for the patient to wear, and components that the support structure maintains on the patient's body. The components include a defibrillator, associated electrodes, and so on. The defibrillator can operate in a WCD mode while the patient wears the support structure. The defibrillator can further operate in a different, AED mode, during which time the patient need not wear a portion of the support structure, or even the entire support structure. Sometimes the AED mode is a type of a fully automatic AED mode. Other times the AED mode is a type of a semi-automated AED mode, where an attendant is present to administer the shock; at such times, the patient may not even need to have electrodes attached. This way the patient is more comfortable for a longer time.

  • Patent number: 6402067
Abstract: A pair of refiner members comprises respective refiner bars which cooperate to refine pulp. At least one the refiner bars extends in a spiral pattern for imparting a screw-like pumping action to the pulp. The refiner bars of the cooperating refiner members have different pitch to produce a differential pumping action and increase crossovers between the refiner members in order to improve refining. A sinuous curvature can also be introduced in the spiral pattern to further increase crossovers between the refiner members.

  • Patent number: 6303003
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for continuously drawing superheated vapor through a moist web as the same is being formed and pressed at a porous peripheral surface of a rotatable hollow cylinder, thereby allowing to have web drying in a compact apparatus permitting recycling of heat. The extracted moisture is transformed in superheated vapor and again used in the drying of incoming web.

  • Patent number: 5060332
Abstract: A cable stayed bridge which includes a pair of towers on either side of a gap and a roadway deck extending across the gap between the towers and cable stays fanning out from the top of each tower to separate longitudinally spaced load-bearing points on the decks such that a pair of cable stays extends from each load-bearing point on the deck to the tops of the respective towers with a span between towers 10 to 20 times tower height above the deck.

  • Patent number: 4874136
Abstract: A pulp refiner has a pair of refiner members with opposed surfaces each including alternating grooves and lands extending between a central port and a peripheral port through which a pulp slurry is passed. The edges of the lands define work edges. Drive means are provided for rotating at least one of the members relative to the other. The grooves and lands defined in at least one member extend from the central to the peripheral port in a spiral pattern having a direction on the member from one port to the other relative to the direction of rotation which will provide a screw pump action to the pulp slurry as it advances from one port to the other. The pitch of the spiral lands forming the work edges on the opposed surfaces of the respective refiner members is such that the intersection of the opposed work edges defines an obtuse angle on the downstream side of the lands relative to the direction of rotation and flow such that pulp fibers suspended in the pulp slurry will be subjected to a pinching action.

  • Patent number: 4826571
Abstract: In a press for papermaking comprising in combination, a pair of elongated rollers arranged one to another to provide an adjustable elongated nip therebetween, each of the rollers comprising a substantially rigid elongated shaft and a substantially rigid elongated sleeve overlying and rotatably supported upon the elongated shaft, the respective shafts extending outboard of the respective sleeve to provide two pairs of parallel spaced shaft outboard portions, the improvement comprising, in the case of each roller, providing a circumferentially extending running fit between the outer surface of the shaft and the inner surface of the sleeve defining an elongated annular chamber extending lengthwise of the sleeve. Other embodiments are disclosed which include the shaft being tubular and pressurized, lubricant in the annular chamber and a cable system for urging the rollers together. A splashguard is also provided for preventing water on the surface of the rollers from rewetting the paper.

  • Patent number: 4675079
Abstract: The present invention provides a drying apparatus for use in a papermaking machine and comprising at least four press rollers in nip contact with one another in succession in a closed train to define a substantially sealed chamber between the press rollers and chamber end walls. At least one of the press rollers is a hollow roller having a pervious outer wall to support at least one endless felt disposed for advance over an outer support surface of at least some of the rollers and passing through all of the nip contacts. The endless felt is a pervious carrier for a paper sheet to be dried. Resilient support means is provided for at least one press roller. Drive means is also provided for at least one press roller. Conduit means permits air movement through the hollow roller and the chamber. Air displacement means is connected to the conduit means. The air movement passes through the sheet carried on the felt whereby to extract moisture from the sheet and for convection of the moisture by the conduit means.

  • Patent number: 4535498
Abstract: A bridge structure comprising at least one pair of upstanding spaced apart rigid mast-towers and a rigid boom-like member extending upwardly and angularly respective each mast-tower. At least a tie member joining the free end of each boom-like member with the free end of its adjacent mast-tower, the tie member having a substantially fixed length and serving to support the boom-like member off the mast-tower. An elongated deck extending beneath the boom-like members and supported from above by a plurality of tie members, the tie members depending downwardly from each boom-like member free end, to define a pair of fan-like configurations. In a further embodiment of the invention, a pair of such structures are utilized, such being arranged in face-to-face relation. In a still further embodiment, a third deck structure is interposed intermediate the two face-to-face structures. In a still further embodiment, the two structures less the decks and their supporting tie members, are utilized as a cable support.
