  • Patent number: 7244784
Abstract: New aqueous PNP dispersions are disclosed. A method of preparing an aqueous PNP dispersion from solvent-based PNPs having a diameter in the range of from 1 to 50 nanometers is disclosed. An associative thickener composition based on PNPs having an average of at least two phobes extending from the surface of said PNPs is also disclosed. The aqueous PNP dispersions are useful in aqueous-based industrial and consumer products, such as latex paint.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 2, 2003
Date of Patent: July 17, 2007
    Assignee: Rohm and Haas Company
Inventors: David Richard Amick, Robert Howard Gore, Dennis Paul Lorah, James Watson Neely
  • Patent number: 7091275
Abstract: An aqueous polymeric composition containing select polymeric nanoparticles is provided. The select polymeric nanoparticles contain as polymerized units at least one multiethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one water soluble monomer; and have a mean diameter in the range of from 1 to 50 nanometers. Also provided are aqueous polymeric compositions that further contain second particles such as pigment particles or second polymer particles. The aqueous polymeric composition is useful for preparing coatings having at least one improved property compared to a coating absent the select polymeric nanoparticles. Further, the aqueous polymeric composition is useful for treating wood. A coating prepared from the aqueous polymeric composition is also provided.

  • Patent number: 7078457
Abstract: An aqueous composition including a polymer having polymerized ethylenically unsaturated acid monomer is disclosed. The aqueous composition is prepared in the presence of select organic compounds. As provided is a process to prepare the aqueous composition. The aqueous composition is useful as a dispersant for inorganic particles, a thickener or rheology modifiers for various aqueous formulations, and as a dispersing resin.

  • Patent number: 6337366
Abstract: A method of improving the viscosity stability of an aqueous composition by the addition to the aqueous composition of a mixture of at least one multiphobe and at least one monophobe is disclosed. The method is particularly useful for stabilizing the viscosity of an aqueous composition containing at least one associative thickener, when surfactants or additives containing surfactants, such as for example colorants, particularly at high levels, are added to the aqueous composition.

  • Patent number: 5908877
Abstract: A water dispersible powder composition is provided. The powder composition contains at least one film-forming polymer having at least one functional group and at least one reactive component that reacts to form a non-ionic bond with the polymer functional group following dispersion of the powder composition in water. The reaction between the polymer particles in the admixture and the reactive component renders the resulting coating water-resistant. The powder composition of this invention is useful for producing water-resistant coatings.
