  • Patent number: 6368724
Abstract: A copolyester blend resistant to ultraviolet radiation includes a polyethylene terephthalate based copolyester having 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol; an effective amount of an ultraviolet radiation absorber selected from the group consisting of benzoxazinones, dimeric benzotriazoles, triazines and mixtures thereof; and from 5 mol % to about 40 mol % isophthalic acid residues present in the copolyester wherein the mole percent is based on 100 mole percent of dicarboxylic acid or equivalents. The copolyester blend is useful in making UV radiation resistant thermoformed articles.

  • Patent number: 6352783
Abstract: A copolyester blend resistant to ultraviolet radiation consists essentially of a polyethylene terephthalate based copolyester having 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol residues; an effective amount of an ultraviolet radiation absorber selected from the group consisting of benzoxazinones, dimeric benzotriazoles, triazines and mixtures thereof; and from about 2 to about 25 mole percent of 4,4′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid residues present in the copolyester wherein the mole percent is based on 100 mole percent of dicarboxylic acid or equivalents. The copolyester blend is useful in making UV radiation resistant thermoformed articles.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: March 5, 2002
    Assignee: Eastman Kodak Company
    Inventor: David Richard Fagerburg
  • Patent number: 6265072
Abstract: Weatherable multi-layer structures that are ultraviolet stabilized contain a substrate layer of a polymer which degrades upon exposure to UV radiation and at least one ultraviolet protective layer based on a 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol-based polycarbonate and an effective level of an ultraviolet absorbing compound. The UV absorbing compound is a benzotriazole, a dimeric benzotriazole, a triazine, a benzoxazinone, or a diphenylcyanoarylate.

  • Patent number: 5783307
Abstract: A UV stabilized multi-layer structure which has an easily visible UV protective layer comprises a UV protective layer and an underlying polymeric layer. The polymeric layer is either a polyester or a polycarbonate. The UV protective layer, which is exposed to UV radiation and protects the polymeric layer, comprises a UV absorbing compound, an optical brightener present in an amount sufficient to cause visual illumination of the UV protective layer upon exposure to a light source and a polymeric base material of either a polyester, polycarbonate or acrylic. Upon exposure to a UV light or white light source the UV protective layer is visibly illuminated. A method of detecting the UV protective layer in the UV stabilized multi-layer structure is also provided.
