    Abstract: 3-Isochromanone is prepared by partially chlorinating o-tolylacetic acid with sulphuryl chloride or chlorine gas in an inert organic solvent in the presence of a free radical initiator. The 2-chloromethylphenylacetic acid first obtained is converted to 3-isochromanone by treatment with a base and separated from unreacted o-tolylacetic acid, which is in the form of a salt, by a phase separation technique. The separated o-tolylacetic acid salt is converted to o-tolylacetic acid by controlled acidification and the o-tolylacetic acid is extracted for re-use. The invention reduces the formation of unwanted, over-chlorinated by-products and leads to a more efficient process.

Oxygenate feeds used in the conversion of oxygenates to olefins, and which contain contaminants, are heated to form a vapor stream and a liquid stream. The heating is conducted so that a majority of the metalloaluminophosphate molecular sieve catalyst contaminants is contained in the liquid stream. The vapor stream is separated from the liquid stream, and the separated vapor stream is contacted with the metalloaluminophosphate molecular sieve catalyst to form olefin product. The heating of the feedstream and the separation of the vapor stream can be carried out in one or more stages.

    Abstract: A system and method of using the system are provided for collecting and analyzing urine from an animal. A cage with a fluid pervious floor is provided for holding an animal. Urine from the animal flows through the cage floor into a hydrostatic column. An analyzing device is engaged with or positioned proximate to the column in position to analyze the urine entering the column. The column is structured to discharge a volume of liquid equivalent to the volume of urine that enters the column. The discharged liquid is received in a container which is located on a scale that weighs the received liquid. Data from the analyzing device and the scale is automatically stored by a data processing system. A rinse container with a liquid rinse is provided to rinse the column. Preferably the data processing system automatically controls valves to automatically rinse the column after each animal urination or after a predetermined period of time has elapsed.
