Patent number: 8128990Abstract: The invention provides a coating composition for an optical element, such as an ophthalmic lens. The coating composition includes a relatively rigid multifunctional monomer and a relatively flexible difunctional monomer. The rigid multifunctional monomer and the flexible difunctional monomer are capable of co-reacting to form an abrasion resistant coating on the optical element. The invention also provides a method of forming an abrasion resistant coating on an optical element, such as an ophthalmic lens. The method includes the steps of coating the optical element with a relatively rigid multifunctional monomer and a relatively flexible difunctional monomer, and polymerising the coating to form an abrasion resistant coating on the optical element.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 2002Date of Patent: March 6, 2012Assignee: Carl Zeiss Vision Australia Holdings Ltd.Inventor: David Robert Diggins

Patent number: 8044141Abstract: The present invention provides a method for tinting an optical substrate. The method includes the steps of applying a coating composition containing: a polymerisable monomer having a polyoxyalkylene backbone containing at least four contiguous oxyalkylene units, and an abrasion resistant agent and/or a high crosslinking polymerisable monomer to the optical substrate, polymerising the coating composition to form an abrasion resistant coating layer, and introducing a tinting compound into the coating layer to thereby tint the optical substrate. The invention also provides a coating composition and an optical substrate that is tinted according to the method of the invention.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2010Date of Patent: October 25, 2011Assignee: Carl Zeiss Vision Australia Holdings LimitedInventor: David Robert Diggins

Publication number: 20080311404Abstract: The invention provides an abrasion resistant coating composition for an optical element. The composition includes a polymerisable epoxy monomer having an average of at least two epoxy groups in the monomer molecule. The composition is capable of forming an abrasion resistant coating on an optical element after ionic polymerisation. The coating composition may also include an ionically polymerisable alkene monomer having an average of at least two polymerisable double bonds in the molecule.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2006Publication date: December 18, 2008Applicant: Carl Zeiss Vision Australia Holdings LimitedInventor: David Robert Diggins
