  • Publication number: 20120198502
Abstract: A receiver is used with third code blocks based on first code blocks, second code blocks, and a planning code block. The first code blocks are associated with a first sequence number and modulated with a first modulation scheme. The second code blocks are associated with a second sequence number and modulated with a second modulation scheme. The planning code block associates the third code blocks with the first code blocks and the second code blocks. The receiver includes a de-multiplexing portion, which includes a code block selector and a look up table, that outputs a de-multiplexed signal based on the third code blocks. The code block selector selects a code block from the third code blocks to output as the de-multiplexed signal based on entries in the look up table. The receiver also includes a recovery portion that outputs received code blocks based on the de-multiplexed signal.

  • Patent number: 6721538
Abstract: An approach for minimizing variation in transmit power of synchronized signals that are destined to a satellite is disclosed. A gateway station system for communicating with a communication satellite includes a multiple signal sources which generate the synchronized signals. The gateway station system utilizes a control logic that is coupled to the signal sources. The control logic operates to offset selectively transmission times of a portion of the synchronized signals according to a predetermined distribution and an offset period. The predetermined distribution specifies about half the number of the synchronized signals are to be offset. The offset period is half a symbol period. The terminals within the satellite communication system has a receiver that receives the synchronized signal from the communication satellite.

  • Patent number: 6650895
Abstract: A system and a methodology to improve the end-user quality of service both in terms of response time and reliability for the transport of in-call DTMF signals in wireless systems, particularly in geostationary mobile satellite systems. The methodology encompasses several techniques to provide acceptable end-to-end quality of service for DTMF. A technique is applicable for transport of DTMF in the wireless subscriber to network direction, where DTMF digits are carried in the form of an out-band message. The central part of the technique is to allow multiple key presses in the same message, thereby increasing efficiency and throughput in long-delay environment. Another technique utilizes the vocoder's functionality to carry DTMF in-band, thereby reducing system complexity.

  • Patent number: 6553225
Abstract: An apparatus and method, for use in a satellite-based communications network, for positioning offset zones in a spot beam coverage area to maximize call duration. The apparatus and method employs a spot beam segregator and an offset zone arranger. The spot beam segregator segregates a coverage area of a spot beam generated by a satellite in the network into at least one offset zone based on respective propagation time periods required for signals to travel between the satellite and respective different locations in the coverage area. The offset zone arranger arranges each offset zone such that each respective center of each one offset zone overlaps a respective geographical location in the coverage area, with each respective geographic location having a respective access terminal density greater than any other geographical region within its respective offset zone.

  • Patent number: 5781540
Abstract: The present invention relates to a device and a method for communicating in a mobile communication system. The method provides a carrier signal having a plurality of frames. Each frame has a plurality of time slots, and each time slot comprises a plurality of transmission bits. A group of time slots are assigned to a communication channel. A traffic burst signal having a plurality of traffic symbols is transmitted over the communication channel by transmitting a first preamble over one of the assigned time slots, and transmitting a second preamble and at least one of the traffic symbols over at least one of the other assigned time slots. The second preamble occupies fewer transmission bits than the first preamble.

  • Patent number: 5577074
Abstract: The effects of long-term drift in a local reference oscillator are compensated by dividing the local reference oscillator frequency by one of three divider patterns (nominal ratio, add a cycle, delete a cycle) so that the symbol clock of the remote terminal is equal to the outroute symbol rate. The number of add a cycle and delete a cycle divider patterns are counted and stored. The average of the number of add a cycle and delete a cycle patterns is used to control the transmit frequency of the remote terminal to correspond to the outroute symbol rate. Thus, the clock recovery process generates a frequency calibration number used to track the frequency of the remote terminal local reference oscillator and to adjust the transmit frequency of the remote terminal accordingly.

  • Patent number: 5455964
Abstract: The frequency and power of transmissions in a mobile communication system, such as an air-to-ground telephony system, are stabilized without a priori knowledge of the system gain factors or frequency references. The ground station monitors the available channels and modifies a vacant channel broadcast message to provide information that the channel is available. In this way, the air terminals have knowledge of all available channels. The ground station transmits a pilot signal. Upon request by a user for a dial tone at the air terminal, the air terminal selects a vacant channel and scans for the pilot signal. The air terminal estimates a distance to the ground station and sets a power level of a seizing transmission based on the estimated distance. The air terminal also estimates a Doppler frequency shift of the selected channel due to the relative movement of the air terminal with respect to the ground station and sets a frequency of the seizing transmission based on the estimated Doppler frequency shift.

  • Patent number: 5309439
Abstract: A TDMA system operates without the requirement for a reference burst. A station in the TDMA system monitors the bursts from other stations to determine the virtual reference. The virtual reference is then used as the basis, at the station, for transmitting its own burst. For carrier-based TDMA systems, the station can also determine a virtual carrier reference. This is implemented by measuring the received carrier from a plurality of bursts. The received carrier frequency of all of the bursts that have been received can then be averaged, and after correcting for frequency translation introduced by the transponder, the result can be employed as a virtual carrier reference.

  • Patent number: 4751701
Abstract: A collision detection mechanism includes a transmission protocol which locates a gap in a station's transmission, of fixed duration and position, relative to start of transmission. Collision detection is enhanced since random timing of collisions normally results in filling in the gap. This condition is more readily detectable than detecting the simultaneous presence of energy from two transmitters. The transmission protocol is followed unless the transmitting station detects a collision, in which event gap creation is inhibited. The gap detecting equipment may be located at a network head end.
