  • Patent number: 5689329
Abstract: A flying height tester that can vary an air pressure and measure an air bearing height between a slider and a substrate. The substrate is located within a chamber that has an air pressure. The tester includes a loader which places a slider adjacent to the substrate. An optical system computes the air bearing height from a light beam that is directed through the substrate and reflected off of the slider. The chamber is coupled to a pressure control system that can vary the pressure of the air surrounding the slider. The pressure control system varies the pressure to simulate slider operation at various altitudes. The tester of the present invention can thus measure air bearing height while simulating various altitude conditions.

  • Patent number: 5490517
Abstract: A three-dimensional grid is created by a series of panels arranged in a s-circle about a seated subject. The panels are configured or otherwise arranged to allow the seated subject full range of reach in all directions. The subject may be seated or standing and is placed a distance from the panels. The panels include a plurality of rods which slideably project through the panels in the direction of the seated subject. To determine reach, the subject reaches toward the rods and pushes them with either hand as far away from him/her as possible. Measurements may then be taken from the end of each rod that has been moved. Similarly situated panels, including visual indicia, may be used to evaluate field of view.

  • Patent number: 5299227
Abstract: A compact beacon-detector type IFF system to be carried by individual soldiers. The system consists of a beacon and a special purpose detector. The beacon is a small, light-weight, battery powered device that is worn on the soldier's web gear. The detector consists of a small flashlight-like device that can be hand held or mounted on a weapon, similar to a rifle scope. The beacon's signal is not visible to those using existing night vision equipment nor is it otherwise exploitable by a potential adversary. The system achieves its covertness through the selection of the optical wavelength used by the beacon. Further signature reduction is achieved through the use of a Low Probability of Intercept ("LPI") spread spectrum waveform as the beacon output. This waveform utilizes a spreading code to encode the beacon output signal.

  • Patent number: 5142824
Abstract: A sliding window assembly for moving a window between a cavity defined by a structure having an outer surface, and a space located above the cavity comprises a first motor for selectively moving the window between the cavity and the space and a second motor for selectively moving the window between a first position substantially aligned with the cavity and a second position substantially aligned with the outer surface. First sensors indicate when the window is substantially entirely within the cavity and when the window is substantially entirely within the space. Second sensors indicate when the window is in the first position and when the window is in the second position. In one embodiment of the invention, third sensors indicate when the window is positioned for the second motor to move the window between the first and second positions. A programmable logic controller is connected to the sensors for appropriately controlling the motors.

  • Patent number: 4939689
Abstract: A relational database is created and queried through the use of an outliner-style text editor which permits automatic generation of data entry forms for the creation of records. Data entry and editing are simplified and errors are minimized because changes in the outline are automatically reflected in the data entry forms and thus the automatically updated records. Data retrieval is driven through the manipulation of the outline to allow simple and complex queries without utilizing a database programming language. A specialized global field is utilized in which identical field names may be repetitively inserted into several databases. In the data entry mode, a global value can be set and that value is automatically inserted into each database record containing that global field as they are created so that relations are made automatically within the various databases.
