The base station system comprises an input for receiving the incoming data stream and a processor for receiving the incoming data stream from the input. The processor is operable to determine a desired level of service for the incoming data stream; dynamically assign a plurality of channels to the incoming data stream; segment the incoming data stream into a plurality of segments based on the number of channels dynamically assigned; and provide a parallel stream of the segmented data stream to a plurality of respective coders for coding the respective segments of the data stream.
