Such materials are typically used in hospital operating rooms and have material memory meaning that they re-expand after compression. Consequently they are difficult to process as waste material. The present invention is a method and apparatus for thermally compacting a polymer comprising a first and second heated surface inclined downwardly towards each other and providing with a passage at their lower ends through which melted polymeric material may pass.

There is an apparatus for processing waste material comprising a compaction compartment for receipt of waste material, the compaction compartment have a screw vane for processing waste material through the compaction compartment and a waste material outlet. In one aspect the apparatus comprises a heating zone including an arrangement for heating the waste material received from the waste outlet, the apparatus further comprising a cooling zone including a cooling arrangement for cooling the waste material received from the heating zone.

In one embodiment, there is a the method including, introducing the medical waste into a heating zone, heating the medical waste to a sanitizing temperature thereby melting a majority of the medial waste, moving the medical waste via gravity into a cooling receiver, cooling the medical waste by cooling the cooling receiver; and removing the medical waste from the cooling receiver.
