Publication number: 20230016423Abstract: A plurality of air bags is provided as part of a child safety seat for use in a vehicle. The decompressed external air bag extends outwardly from a wing of the seat and transfers an air volume to the initially compressed internal bag, causing it to inflate and cushion the head and/or upper body of the occupant of the safety seat. When installed in a vehicle the seat equipped with air bags serves to mitigate any free flight zones during a collision, increase ride down time, and allow early loading onset, and thereby improve the safety of the occupant. The external airbag may be adjustable for tailoring the safety seat to the vehicle dimensions and being collapsible for stowage.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 10, 2019Publication date: January 19, 2023Inventor: David Shaun Carine

Patent number: 8746793Abstract: Child safety seats are used for the safe transport of children in vehicles. The child safety seats known from prior art often offer only insufficient protection in the case of a side impact. It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a child safety seat that improves the protective effect of the child safety seat in the case of a side impact. This object is solved by a child safety seat with side impact protection according to the invention. Such a child safety seat comprises at least one element absorbing and/or transmitting energy which is arranged and designed to be transferred from a rest position to a functioning position to absorb a laterally impacting energy in the functioning position.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2013Date of Patent: June 10, 2014Assignee: Britax Romer Kindersicherheit GmbHInventors: Iain Powell, David Shaun Carine, Richard Arthur Moon, Andrew Anthony Whiteway

Patent number: 7506926Abstract: A deformable, polypropylene-moulding lining (11), is provided in a head rest. It has a crosspiece (12), clipped (14) to the head support (5) and right and left deformable wings (15, 16). These are longer than the support wings (5, 6) of the head part (4), extending past distal edges (17) of the support wings. The deformable wings are spaced inwards from the support wings, with voids (18) defined between them. The deformable wings are divided into two in their forwards extent by a living hinge (19) into a front portion (20) and a rear portion (21). The living hinge is positioned just inside the distal edges of the shell wings. The injection moulded lining has its own foam materiel lining (22), the whole being covered with upholstery (23). The result of the arrangement is that if an occupant's head H impacts the lining in side impact of the vehicle equipped with the seat, the relevant lining wing will be pressed against the shell wing.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2005Date of Patent: March 24, 2009Assignee: Britax Excelsior LimitedInventor: David Shaun Carine

Publication number: 20080315647Abstract: A base for a child safety seat adapted for use with an adult seat in a vehicle which has a substructure adapted for being positioned on the adult seat bottom. A pair of attachments are selected from the group of the adult seat at the seat's junction between the seat back and the seat bottom. A pair of links pivotally connect at respective first ends to the pair of attachments. At the opposing ends, the links connect to elevated link securement points of the child safety seat. A foot prop is attached to the front portion of the base for extending past the front edge of the adult seat bottom. A connecting element between the child safety seat and the substructure permits the child safety seat to move away from the back of the adult seat with a corresponding elevation of the front of the base.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 6, 2005Publication date: December 25, 2008Applicant: BRITAX EXCELSIOR LIMITEDInventor: David Shaun Carine

Publication number: 20080277914Abstract: The present invention concerns a tension indicator (10) for a strap; the tension indicator comprising a first part (11) for receiving a length of the strap, a second part (12) movably mounted with respect to the first part between open and closed positions, the second part having strap engagement means (23) for engaging said length of strap. The strap engagement means is biased relative to the first part for pulling any slack in the strap into the first part, thereby allowing the second part to move to said open position.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 16, 2006Publication date: November 13, 2008Applicant: BRITAX EXCELSIOR LIMITEDInventors: David Shaun Carine, Jan Holland, Anthony Wright

Publication number: 20080277984Abstract: The present invention concerns a child safety seat (1) for use with a vehicle seat. The child safety seat comprises a child seat body having: —a child support portion (2), and a base member (7), a link (11) projecting from the child seat body, and a releasable connector (12) provided on the link for engagement with an anchorage unit associated with the vehicle seat. The link is attached directly to the child seat body by a pivot connection (14) that permits angular movement of the child seat body relative to the link about an axis, a foot prop (24) being provided at the front of the child seat body.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 22, 2006Publication date: November 13, 2008Applicant: BRITAX CHILDCARE LIMITEDInventor: David Shaun Carine

Publication number: 20080246316Abstract: A child restraint system is provided for detecting and indicating whether a vehicle seat belt is sufficiently tensioned to secure a child seat onto a seat of a vehicle and whether a child seat harness is sufficiently tensioned to restrain a child within the child seat. The child restraint system includes a vehicle seat belt tension sensor and status indicator and a child seat harness tension sensor and status indicator. The child restraint system further includes an occupant sensor for determining whether a child is seated within the child seat. If the occupant sensor determines that a child is seated within the child seat, the vehicle seat belt status indicator is disabled, thereby preventing the weight of the child from interfering with the proper installation of the child seat onto the seat of the vehicle by applying a downward force to the vehicle seat belt tension sensor.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 22, 2007Publication date: October 9, 2008Inventors: David Shaun Carine, Michael Hudswell, David Gardiner Downie

Publication number: 20030047972Abstract: A child safety seat, for use in a vehicle, has a seat body including a seat portion and a seat back. A link member connects the seat body to a vehicle body. Movement of the link member relative to the seat body is arranged to cause movement of a part of the child seat relative to the child seat body so as to put the child seat in a better condition to protect a child occupant in the event of an accident.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 15, 2002Publication date: March 13, 2003Inventors: David William Burleigh, David Shaun Carine

Patent number: 6471298Abstract: A child safety seat for use in a vehicle has a seat body and a harness including a pair of shoulder straps which extend through respective slots in the seat back to a mechanism for adjusting the length of the shoulder straps. The height at which the shoulder straps project from the seat back can be varied by threading them through different slots. A pad is slidably mounted on each shoulder strap and has a cover formed of high friction material on the side thereof facing the child occupant's body. A tether strap has one end attached to each pad and projects through the same slot in the seat back as the corresponding shoulder strap for limiting movement of the corresponding chest pad along the shoulder strap to a predetermined limit distance away from the seat back. Such limit distance increases as the height at which the shoulder straps project from the seat back is increased.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2001Date of Patent: October 29, 2002Assignee: Britax-Excelsior LimitedInventors: David Shaun Carine, Andrew Patrick Beaumont
