Abstract: Classification of images or other types of high-resolution data is performed by a cluster-based data classification system. The system comprises a learner module, a classification director, and a complex classifier comprising a plurality of multi-outcome data classifiers. The classification director determines particular process rules and settings to be applied to a classification request, and the complex classifier is instantiated to process the classification request in accordance with the process rules and settings determined by the classification director. The process rules and settings are adapted under control of the learner module at least in part based on results obtained in processing the classification request and one or more additional classification requests.

Abstract: A data set manager is configured to interact with data processing elements of an information processing system. The data set manager comprises a metadata capture module configured to access or otherwise obtain metadata characterizing data sets associated with the data processing elements, a reasoning module configured to perform one or more reasoning operations on the metadata, and an action recommendation module configured to identify one or more recommended actions for the data processing elements based at least in part on results of the reasoning operations. The metadata characterizes properties of the data sets and relationships among the data sets, and may be defined in accordance with at least one of a specified ontology and a specified class. The data set manager and associated data processing elements may be implemented, by way of example, in cloud infrastructure of a cloud service provider, or on another type of processing platform.

Abstract: A processing device of an information processing system is configured to detect bursts of activity associated with a particular user, to map the bursts to tasks performed by the user, to generate a user model based on the mapping of bursts to tasks, and to provide personalized query processing to the user based on the user model. The user model may comprise a Hidden Markov Model. In one embodiment, a query is received from the user in a current time window, and a model parameter is obtained. Based on the model parameter, a most likely task for the user in the current time window is identified, and based on the query, the most likely task, and user classification, search results are ranked for presentation to the user. The processing device may be configured to communicate the user model to a cloud service provider, and to receive from the cloud service provider the ranked search results determined based on the user model.

Abstract: An information processing system comprises a system management tool, a managed system and a classifier. The system management tool receives a result of a situation classification operation from the classifier, and automatically takes a management action relating to the managed system based at least in part on the result of the situation classification operation. The situation classification result may be determined by monitoring operation of the managed system in a situational state space having dimensions that characterize operating conditions of the system, and identifying a current state of the system in the situational state space. The management action automatically taken by the system management tool may comprise, for example, setting at least one policy for the managed system by selecting and deploying a particular one of a plurality of policy sets responsive to the result of the situation classification operation.

The controller is configured to adjust one or more parameters of the infrastructure via corresponding control points. Associated with the analyzer is a situational analysis framework configured to periodically select and deploy for use by the controller a particular one of the specified plurality of policy sets responsive to changing operating conditions of the infrastructure.

Abstract: The operation of a data storage system is controlled by determining dimensions of a situational state space characterizing operating conditions of the data storage system, associating policy sets with respective states of the state space, monitoring system operation in the state space, selecting a particular one of the policy sets based on an identified current state in the state space, and controlling the operation of the system in accordance with the selected policy set. These operations are performed by a processing device incorporated in or otherwise associated with the system, with the processing device implementing a situational analysis framework comprising a learning module coupled to a production module. The situational analysis framework may be part of a policy engine. The dimensions of the situational state space in an illustrative embodiment may comprise two or more dimensions selected from one or more dimension categories such as load, performance, time and event state.
