  • Patent number: 8710843
Abstract: A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) apparatus suitable for radiotherapy. The apparatus includes two sets of coil pairs, each coil pair forming a Maxwell-like coil. The two sets of coil pairs share a common transverse plane, have opposing polarities, and define a common plane of symmetry and an imaging area. The two sets generate a substantially homogenous electromagnetic field in a first transverse direction in the imaging area and peripheral electromagnetic fields in a direction opposite to the first transverse direction in a peripheral area. The apparatus also includes at least one focusing magnet positioned in the peripheral areas to generate a focusing electromagnetic field in a focusing area, in a direction substantially the same as the first transverse direction. At least a portion of the peripheral electromagnetic fields is maintained in a defocusing area between the focusing area and the imaging area.

  • Patent number: 8711863
Abstract: Virtual links may be used to divert traffic within an Ethernet network without affecting overall traffic patterns on the Ethernet network. In one embodiment, the virtual link may be established on the network via a routing system in use on the network. Nodes on a defined path for the virtual link will install forwarding state for the virtual link so that traffic may follow the defined path through the network. The logical view of the virtual link, from a routing perspective however, has the same cost as the shortest path between the endpoints of the virtual link and, accordingly, does not affect other traffic patterns on the network. Once established, the end nodes on the virtual path will have two equal cost paths through the network—one following the shortest path tree and one along the path for the virtual link. The end nodes may use a tie breaking process in an Equal Cost Multi Path (ECMP) selection process to preferentially select the virtual link over the shortest path.

  • Patent number: 8713092
Abstract: Disclosed is a system for servers to redirect client requests to other servers in order to distribute client traffic among the servers. A client is assigned to a server although the client may be unaware of that assignment. When the client accesses a server, a server possibly identified to the client by a name service, the server checks the client's assignment. If the client is not assigned to this server, then in some scenarios this server redirects the client to its assigned server. The client responds by sending its request to the assigned server. In other scenarios, the first server accessed by the client proxies the client's traffic to the assigned server. A database is kept of client-to-server assignments. If the present load distribution is less than ideal (e.g., clients are assigned to an unavailable server), then the assignment database is updated to reflect how the load should be distributed.

  • Patent number: 8712361
Abstract: A method for reciprocal-mixing noise cancellation may include receiving, from a first mixer, a first signal comprising a wanted signal at a first frequency and a modulated signal at a second frequency. The modulated signal may be a product of a reciprocal-mixing of an unwanted signal with a phase noise. The second frequency may be greater than the first frequency, and at least a portion of the modulated signal may overlap the wanted signal, adding a reciprocal-mixing noise to the wanted signal. Using the first signal, a narrow second signal may be generated at a third frequency, twice the second frequency. At a second mixer, the second signal may be mixed with the first signal to generate a third signal. The third signal may be subtracted from the first signal to remove a reciprocal-mixing noise and to generate the wanted signal at the first frequency without the reciprocal-mixing noise.

  • Patent number: 8713130
Abstract: Systems and methods described herein utilize a distributed server network to allow for the real-time distribution of copies of a data stream uploaded from a computing device. The uploaded data stream corresponds to an environment surrounding a user (exam taker) of the computing device during execution of a testing routine for an examination. Providing copies of the data stream in real-time allows proctors as well as other test assessment authorities to ‘peek in’ on the exam taker's environment during the exam. As a result, the environment surrounding the exam taker can be monitored in real-time to determine whether any visual or audio activity in the environment constitutes activity not in accordance with the exam protocol. Following an affirmative determination that the exam taker violated an exam taking protocol, a proctor or other test assessment authority can then make a final or early decision regarding disciplinary action.

  • Patent number: 8711477
Abstract: Polarization preserving front projection screens and diffusers provide optimum polarization preservation for stereoscopic 3D viewing, as well as improved light control for enhanced brightness, uniformity, and contrast for both 2D and 3D systems. Generally, the disclosed screens direct light from a projector toward viewers within a diffusion locus, while maintaining optimum gain characteristics. More specifically, light incident on a region of the front projection screen from a predetermined projection direction is reflected by an engineered surface to a predetermined diffusion locus after undergoing substantially single reflections. The engineered surface, comprised of generating kernels, is used to optimally diffuse illumination light into a range of viewing angles, within the diffusion locus, with suitable gain profile, while optimally preserving polarization for 3D applications.
