  • Patent number: 8371156
Abstract: A compression sensor gasket assembly and method of construction thereof is provided. The compression sensor gasket assembly includes a gasket body having opposite sealing surfaces extending between an outer periphery and an inner periphery with the inner periphery bounding a through opening. The gasket body has a passage extending from the outer periphery through the inner periphery and a pressure sensor assembly releasably attached to the gasket body in the passage and being configured to sense pressure within the through opening. The pressure sensor assembly can be removed from the gasket body in service without having to disassemble clamped members from clamped abutment with the gasket assembly. Further, the pressure sensor assembly can be routed over a curved path extending between the outer and inner peripheries to navigate about features that may be present in the gasket body.

  • Publication number: 20070211974
Abstract: An oil lubricated rotating hub (14) and stationary spindle (12) assembly includes an oil bath seal (16, 16?) for establishing a dynamic sealing interface between the hub (14) and spindle (12). A wheel sensor assembly includes a variable reluctance senor (54) targeted at an encoder ring (56, 56?) which is integrated into the oil bath seal (16, 16?). The encoder ring (56, 56?) is of the permanent magnet type including a plurality of magnetically polarized sectors alternating between North and South polarities. The use of an encoder style target (56, 56?) in combination with a variable reluctance sensor (54) enables improved slow speed sensing with relatively large air gap spacing between the exposed (58, 58?) of the encoder ring (56, 56?) and the head of the VR sensor (54). Furthermore, the encoder ring (56, 56?) enables use of less expensive, lighter materials for the oil bath seal carrier (20, 20?).

  • Publication number: 20060038354
Abstract: A seal assembly and method for the manufacture thereof is provided. The seal assembly provides a dynamic fluid seal between a housing having a bore and a shaft having an outer running surface rotating within the bore. The seal assembly comprises a rigid carrier for supporting the seal assembly within the bore of the housing. A flexible member is mounted to the rigid carrier. The flexible member is formed from an elastomeric material that allows the flexible member to flex during use. A sealing element is retained by the flexible member about the outer running surface. The sealing element is formed from a non-polytetrafluoroethylene bearing grade plastic material having a hardness relatively greater than a hardness of the elastomeric material of the flexible member. The sealing element moves with the flexible member as the flexible member flexes. The sealing element extends along the outer running surface in a plurality of helically wound convolutions.

  • Publication number: 20050230920
Abstract: A shaft seal/position sensor module assembly includes a carrier body that is mountable on a shaft housing about an opening through which a rotatable shaft extends. A sleeve is mountable on the shaft and carries a multi-pole encoder ring having a radially outwardly facing sensor surface. A magneto-resistive sensor is mounted on said carrier body in position to communicate with said sensor surface of said encoder ring.

  • Publication number: 20050156384
Abstract: A hydrodynamic PTFE seal for a rotating part including a first portion supported by a flexible, elastomeric member and a second portion extending from the first portion past the elastomeric member along the rotating part. The second or trailing portion of the seal is concentrically disposed about the rotating part. The first portion of the seal attached to the elastomeric member is also concentrically disposed around the rotating part. The seal can also include a living hinge portion disposed between the first and second portions. The first portion, the second portion and the living hinge portion can jointly define a continuous sealing surface.

  • Publication number: 20050052043
Abstract: A backing ring that serves to back an antifriction bearing on the journal of a rail car axle includes an annular body that seats against a fillet that is located at the end of the journal and also a lip that projects over a larger dust guard diameter that is located on the axle immediately beyond the fillet. In addition, the backing ring includes a stabilizing element which cooperates with the lip and with the dust guard diameter to lessen the tendency of the annular body to work against the fillet and create a fretting wear when the journal undergoes cyclic flexures. The stabilizing element accommodates dust guard diameters of varying size. The stabilizing element may also establish a seal between the lip and the dust guard diameter.
