  • Patent number: 8787124
Abstract: Systems and methods for extracting a Curie temperature distribution in a heat assisted magnetic recording medium are provided. One such method involves saturating a magnetic recording medium by causing a laser to direct light on the medium and causing a magnet adjacent to the medium to generate a magnetic field on the medium, causing the magnet to remove the magnetic field on the medium, writing to the medium by causing the laser to direct light on the medium, recording measurements of light reflected from the medium made by a light detector, converting the measurements of reflected light into measurements of remanent thermal magnetization, and extracting the Curie temperature distribution from the measurements of remanent thermal magnetization. • Patent number: 7944643
Abstract: A magnetic disk media is physically preformatted to have a non-user data area providing any of a servo pattern, a gray code pattern and a timing line pattern. The non-user data area patterns are preformatted to have non-recordable regions with a radial width that is always less than the track pitch of the data area. In exemplary implementations, servo patterns, gray code patterns and timing line patterns are physically preformatted to have a recordable:non-recordable radial width ratio substantially equal to that of a user data area. In certain embodiments, non-magnetic or magnetically suppressed regions having cross-track dimension substantially equal to that of spaces between tracks in the user data area are consecutively offset in a cross-track direction from the discrete track recording pattern of the user data area.

  • Patent number: 7425719
Abstract: An optical test head comprises one or more detectors for providing output signals indicative of the condition of a workpiece surface. Data from these detectors are stored in one or more memories only when the data from the detectors satisfy one or more conditions (e.g. the data exceed than a particular threshold). The data are then passed from the one or more memories to an electrical circuit for processing. In addition, location information is stored in one or more memories and passed on to the electrical circuit when the data from the detectors satisfy the one or more conditions.
