Patent number: 7290474Abstract: A system for stopping a spinning table saw blade is comprised of a pin assembly disposed adjacent to a saw blade assembly for stopping a spinning saw blade. A receiving block is disposed on a side of the saw blade opposing the pin assembly for receiving the tip of the pin assembly. A driving assembly is coupled to the pin assembly for driving the pin assembly into the spinning saw blade into the receiving block. Finally, a sensing assembly is coupled to at least one of the saw blade assembly and the driving assembly for sensing encroachment of a user's hand in a pre-defined zone. In use, upon sensing a user's hand the sensing assembly signals the driving assembly to stop the spinning saw blade by driving the pin assembly through the saw blade and into the receiving block.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2004Date of Patent: November 6, 2007Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventor: David V. Patent number: 6464573Abstract: A removable guard for a hand-held power tool. The guard is configured to cover an area proximate a spindle assembly of the tool between the spindle assembly and a user of the tool. The guard is further configured to be securely mounted to a semi-elastic lower bearing housing supporting the spindle assembly of the tool. The guard, when mounted to the semi-elastic lower bearing housing of the tool, and when in use during operation of the tool, must remain functional under conditions of flying debris, such as under conditions of an exploding, rotating abrasive grinding wheel mounted on the spindle assembly of the tool. The guard includes a clamp ring depending from a guard hood.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2000Date of Patent: October 15, 2002Assignee: Porter-Cable CorporationInventor: David V. Keller

Patent number: 5375495Abstract: An optical system for projecting an alignment marker on to a workpiece relative to the circular blade of a power saw. The light projection system projects a planar beam of light along a plane defined by one side of the blade to designate the location at which that side of the blade will enter the workpiece. An adjustment mechanism may be included to allow movement of the light projection system so that the planar beam of light can be selectively located parallel to the plane defined by either side of the blade.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1993Date of Patent: December 27, 1994Assignee: Porter-Cable CorporationInventors: Donald R. Bosten, John R. Kriaski, John W. Schnell, James P. Nichols, Jr., Steven H. Plume, Matthew G. Popik, Dennis C. Huntsman, Randy G. Cooper, David V. Keller

Patent number: 5285708Abstract: A miter saw with an optical system for projecting an optical alignment marker onto a workpiece. The miter saw has a base, a turntable rotatably supported by the base, a fence disposed above the base for supporting the orientation of the workpiece located on the base, a support coupled to the rear portion of the turntable, and a cutting apparatus including a blade for cutting the workpiece. The cutting apparatus is pivotally coupled to the support for positioning the blade from a raised position above the workpiece to an operational position for engagement with the workpiece. The light projection system is attached to the cutting apparatus for projecting an optical alignment marker onto the workpiece so that the location at which the blade engages the workpiece is in a selectably adjustable relationship with respect to the position of the optical alignment marker on the workpiece.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1992Date of Patent: February 15, 1994Assignee: Porter-Cable CorporationInventors: Donald R.
