  • Patent number: 7170395
Abstract: A method and apparatus for modifying a three-phase power distribution network in a building in order to provide data communication by using a Power Line Carrier (PLC) signal to an approximate electrical central location point of Wye-connected and Delta connected power distribution system remote from the data entry point of the building. A passive coupler device is attached to a centrally located service panel. The passive coupler receives the Power Line Carrier (PLC) signal from the remote entry point in the building and conditions the signal for entry at the service panel onto each phase of the three phase power distribution network.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 14, 2004
Date of Patent: January 30, 2007
    Assignee: Telkonet Communications, Inc.
Inventors: Ralph E. Crenshaw, David W. Grimes, L. Peter Larson, Andrew Pozsgay

  • Patent number: 6668058
Abstract: Method steps and component combinations for establishing a telephony exchange, with benefits of hardwiring, free of a requirement for first installing telephone copper wire service to a concentration of electric power consumers. An operations center for the telephony exchange provides worldwide access by means of a public-switched telephone network and an Internet service provider. Communications received are converted to packetized data signals which are routed for sorting at a transformer service unit (TSU) for electrical power-line transfer with the output of a local transformer. The consumer voltage level transformer output is reactance coupled by the transformer service unit (TSU) to transfer packetized data signals, with transformer output electrical power to a plurality of subscriber service units (SSU's) served by the TSU.

Each SSU sorts packetized data signals for an individual subscriber, selectively providing for plain old telephone service, digital phone service, and worldwide Internet service.

  • Publication number: 20010033566
Abstract: Methods and equipment for establishing a voice and data telecommunications system with the benefits of hardwiring, free of a requirement for extending telephone copper wire service to geographical areas, or into building complexes, where none exits. An electrical capacitive interconnection is established which enables use of existing analog-operated carrier mediums to provide the benefits of hardwired telephone service. Outgoing messages in analog are converted to digital for telephone communication. In a specific embodiment, a capacitive interconnection enables compatible utilization of electrical power lines for carrying such digital signal telecommunication, which is then converted to analog at a receiving location. Computer-operated control enables voice/data communication between multiple users in which communications can be sent and received simultaneously, in both directions, over the same line.
