  • Patent number: 6393511
Abstract: A multi-track density direct access storage device is disclosed. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a direct access storage device for data storage within a data processing system comprises a housing, a rotatable spindle, at least one disk, and several heads. The disk is fixedly mounted to the rotatable spindle, and the rotatable spindle is rotated by a motor within the housing. A first disk surface of the disk has a first track density and a second disk surface of the disk has a second track density; wherein the second track density is preferably greater than the first track density. Each of the several heads contains a transducer to read and write information from and to the disk during the disk rotation.

  • Patent number: 6226154
Abstract: A load/unload ramp in a disk drive has first and second compound surfaces located on opposite sides of the median plane of the disk. Each compound surface has a parking surface disposed outside the disk perimeter. When the read/write heads of the disk drive are unloaded from the disk, the head suspension assemblies that support the heads are parked on the parking surfaces. One of the two parking surfaces is farther than the other parking surface from the median plane of the disk, providing increased separation between the parked read/write heads, thereby improving the ability of the disk drive to withstand shock.

  • Patent number: 6212046
Abstract: An arm assembly for a disk drive device in accordance with the present invention comprises a plurality of arms arranged in parallel to each other, one end of each of said arms supporting a read/write head, and each of said arms having an extended plate which cantilevers from one of side edges of said arm, said extended plate being capable of deflecting in a direction which is vertical to a plane of said arm, and rotationally gimbal to a limited degree about two axes in the plane of said arm, a plurality of first connecting pads provided on each of said extended plates, said first connecting pads being connected to said read/write head, a circuit board which engages with said cantilevered extended plate and is provided with a plurality of second connecting pads characterized in that the plane of said circuit board is approximately orthogonal to said extended plate and is so located with respect to said extended plates of said plurality of arms to align said second connecting pads to said first connecting pads

  • Patent number: 6185075
Abstract: An actuator arm assembly comprises stacked suspensions, spacers, a pivot, washer and nut. The pivot and washer have hold portions for engagement during assembly to prevent misalignment of the suspensions. The suspensions, spacers, and washer each have alignment apertures for receiving an alignment bolt for maintaining proper alignment of the suspensions.

  • Patent number: 5930078
Abstract: The invention is a suspension assembly with one or more head wires running across an upper surface of the suspension assembly; a flexure attached to a lower surface of the suspension assembly; a slider attached to a lower surface of the flexure; and a wiring window through which the one or more head wires pass to be attached to the slider. An alternative embodiment of the invention is a suspension assembly with a load/unload feature at a head end of the suspension assembly.

  • Patent number: 5923105
Abstract: An in-hub brushless permanent magnet DC motor has a radial working gap but uses coils wound in the axial direction of the motor. The coils generate fields that interact with the permanent magnet fields across the radial gap. The stator includes a plurality of angularly spaced stator teeth that have faces radially spaced across the gap from the permanent magnet. The stator teeth are connected to the base and extend axially into a cavity within the hub. The permanent magnet is a magnetically-segmented ring magnet located on an outer rim of the hub radially outwardly from the stator teeth. The magnetic flux from the permanent magnet is directed radially across the gap and into the stator teeth. Each stator tooth has an axially oriented post around which is wound a coil that generates an axial field. The axially-oriented part of each coil forms part of the magnetic circuit. The magnetic flux directed radially into each stator tooth is turned axially into the post and through the coil.

  • Patent number: 5768060
Abstract: A radially and axially preloaded bearing that has a very low mass and axial profile and which can be used in a actuator pivot of a direct access storage device without the need for a second bearing to counter the preload. An outer race of the bearing is split in order to form an open ring. Three balls are placed between the outer race and an inner race. Both the inner surface of the outer race and the outer surface of the inner race are formed such that two contact points exist between each ball and each race. Alternatively, the outer race is a closed toroid. The inner race is radially split to form a lower and an upper race, each being a closed toroid. In yet another alternative, the outer race is radially split into an upper outer race and a lower outer race. The inner race is a single closed toroid. A limiter is used to limit the movement of each of the balls. Alternatively, a conventional ball cage is used.
