The active agent comprises cis-resveratrol, trans-resveratrol, a mixture thereof, or a pharmacologically acceptable salt, ester, amide, prodrug or analog thereof. Administration may be oral, parenteral, or the like. Pharmaceutical compositions for use in conjunction with the therapeutic method are also provided.
