  • Publication number: 20180259023
Abstract: Reciprocating apparatuses such as a displacer in a Stirling engine or Vuilleumier (thermally-driven) heat pump and such as a poppet valve in an internal combustion engine have been known to be built with a mechatronic actuator. The reciprocating element has two springs in compression biased against each other. It has been found that conventional springs in compression introduce losses. A spring is disclosed in which a portion of the coil is wound in a clockwise direction and a portion is wound in a clockwise direction. Also, in reciprocation, the spring is in compression at one end of travel and in tension at the other end of travel.

  • Patent number: 9899877
Abstract: An inductive power transfer system comprises a transmitter circuit comprising a transmitter coil and a receiver circuit comprising a receiver coil spaced from the transmitter coil. The transmitter circuit is in the form of a Class E amplifier with a first inductor and a transistor in series between the terminals of a power supply. A first transmitter capacitance is in parallel with the transistor between the first inductor and a power supply terminal, a primary tank circuit in parallel with the first transmitter capacitance, the primary tank circuit comprising the transmitter coil and a second transmitter capacitance arranged in parallel with the transmitter coil, and a third transmitter capacitance in series with the first inductor between the first transmitter capacitance and the primary tank circuit. The second transmitter capacitance is selected such that a resonant frequency of the primary tank circuit is not equal to the first frequency.

  • Publication number: 20170324277
Abstract: A load-independent Class EF inverter may maintain ZVS operation, and produce a constant output current, rather than a constant output voltage, regardless of the load resistance. A constant output current allows the inverter to operate efficiently for a load range from zero resistance (short circuit) to a certain maximum load resistance, making the inverter more suitable as a coil driver for an IPT system. The resonant frequency of the resonant circuit may be tuned to a non-integer multiple of a switching frequency.

  • Publication number: 20170217546
Abstract: A cleat includes two cams (36) comprising mutually opposed convex surfaces rotatable about parallel axes which extend vertically in a rope-trapping position of the cleat, to bring the arcuate surfaces together and apart. The cams (36) are urged towards each other to trap a rope (66) therebetween. Each cam is also mounted to a horizontal cylinder (2) for rotation about an axis of the cylinder, in order to allow the rope (66) to rotate the arcuate surfaces by pulling in a line above this horizontal axis and to free the rope.

  • Publication number: 20170122626
Abstract: Regenerators for Stirling engines and Vuilleumier heat pumps are difficult to reliably manufacture. A regenerator is disclosed in which edges of the regenerator wire meshes are coated with a stabilizing material. The regenerator wire meshes are then sufficiently stable to be machined to the dimensions of the housing. In some embodiments, the material on the outer surface of the edges of the regenerator is relatively thermally insulating to limit heat transfer to the housing.

  • Patent number: 8935313
Abstract: A technique for managing session setup for video on demand sessions involves caching information related to session setup for a session manager and then utilizing the cached information to setup a video on demand session for a client in response to a session setup request that is received from the client. Because information related to session setup is cached for the session manager, the session manager can utilize the information to establish a session without having to exchange messages with other video on demand elements, in particular other servers in the video on demand network. Reducing or eliminating the number of messages exchanged between video on demand elements enables video on demand sessions to be quickly and efficiently setup.

  • Patent number: 8452885
Abstract: A technique for managing the streaming of digital video content involves providing a unicast stream to a client in response to the playout status of the unicast stream at the client. In particular, a unicast stream is provided to a client based on whether or not the unicast stream is intended for real-time playout at the client. In order to preserve valuable network resources, if the client does not intend the unicast stream for real-time playout, the unicast stream is not provided to the client. Network resources can also be conserved by utilizing one session between a stream server and a client to support more than one active unicast stream between the stream server and the client in the case where at least one of the active unicast streams is not intended for real-time playout at the client.

  • Publication number: 20120133426
Abstract: A direct conversion radio-frequency (RF) receiver includes a controller and an adaptive continuous-time filter. The adaptive continuous-time filter receives a multiple-bit control signal generated by the controller to adjust a characteristic of the continuous-time filter. The controller generates the multiple-bit control signal in response to process variation in the semi-conductor material used to implement the controller and the adaptive continuous-time filter. A method for tuning an adaptive continuous-time filter comprises determining a RC time constant, converting the RC time constant to a digital word, comparing a select bit of the digital word to a respective bit of a predetermined reference word to generate a control bit, applying the control bit to an adjustable element to modify the RC time constant, repeating the determining, converting, comparing and applying steps until the control bits generate an output word and providing the output word to the adaptive continuous-time filter.
