  • Patent number: 9762195
Abstract: Described are techniques for providing users of an audio device with a surround sound experience using ultrasonic transducers of the audio device. The audio device may emit ultrasonic pulses to determine distances between the audio device and one or more objects by detecting ultrasonic pulses reflected by the objects. The intensity and timing of subsequent signals may be determined based on the distances. In addition to providing audio or video content from speakers or a display of the audio device, the ultrasonic transducers may emit ultrasonic carriers modulated with audio signals toward the objects. The ultrasonic carriers demodulate upon interaction with the objects to produce audible sound, which may be reflected back toward the audio device such that the sound appears to be emanating from the object. By timing the emission of the ultrasonic carriers and content from the device speakers and display, the surround sound experience may be synchronized.
