Abstract: A rotary valve adapter assembly comprising an adapter plate configured to attach to a rotary valve body, a torque multiplier assembly comprising one or more planetary gear subassemblies, each of which comprises a sun gear, ring gear, and a plurality of planetary gears, a magnetic actuator assembly comprising two sets of magnetically coupled magnets, and a shaft. The magnetic actuator assembly interfaces with the torque multiplier assembly such that when the magnets of the magnetic actuator assembly rotate, they cause the sun gear of a first planetary gear subassembly to rotate and the planetary gears to walk on the ring gear. The shaft interfaces with the carrier of one of the planetary gear subassemblies such that when the carrier rotates, the shaft also rotates, thereby causing the valve to open and close. The assembly further comprises a pressure equalization system comprising a piston and piston spring or spring washer stack.

Abstract: This disclosure presents mobile vacuum carriers that may be used to support thin substrates that would otherwise be too brittle to transport and process. This disclosure relates to the processing of thin semiconductor substrates and has particular applicability to the fields of photovoltaic solar cells, semiconductor microelectronic integrated circuits, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), optoelectronic devices (such as light-emitting diodes, lasers, photo detectors), data storage devices, etc.

Abstract: Electronic devices can be prepared by forming a patterned thin film on a suitable receiver substrate. A cyanoacrylate polymer is used as a deposition inhibitor material and applied first as a deposition inhibitor material. The deposition inhibitor material can be patterned to provide selected areas on the receiver substrate where the deposition inhibitor is absent. An inorganic thin film is then deposited on the receiver substrate using a chemical vapor deposition technique only in those areas where the deposition inhibitor material is absent. The cyanoacrylate polymer deposition inhibitor material can be applied by thermal transfer from a donor element to a receiver substrate before a patterned thin film is formed.

Abstract: A system and method for visualizing performance metrics are disclosed. The system includes a data acquisition component which collects information related to a set of agents operating in a work environment, a performance metric computation component which computes, for one of the agents, values for a performance metric at each of a plurality of times within a selected time period, and a representation generator which generates a representation for display to the agent, the representation providing the agent with information on the agent's current value for the performance metric. A processor implements the data acquisition component, the performance metric computation component, and the representation generator.

Abstract: Eyeglasses which comprise a pair of optical plates for each eye. Each of the optical plates is made up of a front plate and a rear plate and a return and hinge mechanism links the optical plates of each pair with one another. An adjustment mechanism facilitates relative movement of the optical plates, of each pair, in a plane substantially perpendicular to a viewing direction of the eyeglasses. The return and hinge mechanism and the adjustment mechanism are decoupled.

Abstract: An embodiment of a method for detecting an anomaly in at least a portion of a wireline cable, comprises providing at least one wireline cable, providing a wireline surface equipment system comprising an anomaly detection system and disposing the anomaly detection system adjacent the wireline cable, operating the surface equipment to enable the wireline cable to pass by the anomaly detection system, operating the anomaly detection system to detect the presence of an anomaly in at least a portion of the wireline cable, the anomaly detection system generating an output when an anomaly is detected, and sending the output of the anomaly detection system to a control unit.

Abstract: A portable computer that is configurable between a plurality of display modes including a laptop mode (in which the portable computer has a conventional laptop appearance) and an easel mode in which the base of the computer and its display component stand vertically forming an inverted “V.” The portable computer includes a hinge assembly that couples the display component to the base of the computer, and allows the display component to be rotated about an axis along an interface between the display component and the base to configure the portable computer between a closed position, the laptop mode and the easel mode. The portable computer further comprises a scroll wheel and optional navigation buttons that permit a user to control or manipulate various aspects of operation of the portable computer (such as volume or display brightness) and/or content displayed the computer.

Abstract: A system and method for directing self-targeted advertising to users who are interested in receiving it. A user creates or adopts one or more personas that define a number of characteristics that the user has or wants to be associated with. The characteristics of the personas can be used by advertisers to define members of a target audience. Each persona included in a target audience has an address or identifier to which ads are sent. In one embodiment, users are shown a user interface screen with icons representing a number of brands. The user provides input that indicates whether they have different opinions of the brands. Based on the input received, an estimate is made of the likelihood that the user has a number of characteristics. The user can arrange the icons representing the brands on the user interface screen to indicate if the user likes or dislikes the brand.

Abstract: The present invention is an electrical connector in which a substrate (such as a printed circuit board or PCB) includes a plurality of apertures (or vias) and some of those apertures are filled with two materials to improve the characteristics of the electrical interconnection. The preferred process of crating the filled vias includes the steps of plating the vias with an electrically-conductive material to create an electrically-conductive path between portions of the substrate and components associated with the substrate and partially filling the apertures, then filling at least a portion of the apertures or vias with a second or different filling material to seal at least apart of the electrically conductive path through the plating. The second filling material may be chosen to provide thermal compensation for the connection.

Abstract: Surgical devices are disclosed herein that generally include an intracorporeal elbow joint to facilitate translational movement of an end effector while allowing a body portion of the surgical device and a trocar or working channel through which the device is inserted to be maintained in a fixed angular orientation relative to the patient. This allows a plurality of such devices to be used effectively with a single incision or access device. Such devices also generally provide end effector movement with six degrees of freedom, while maintaining a mechanical linkage between the user and the end effector and while mimicking and/or mirroring natural user movement. Various methods related to such devices are also disclosed.

Abstract: Methods are described for calibrating a turning machine having a first rotatable portion or chuck for holding a workpiece. The first rotatable portion has a first feature associated therewith. The method comprises the steps of using a measurement probe to determine the position of the first feature, rotating the first rotatable portion through an angle, and using said measurement probe to determine the new position of the first feature. The extension of the technique to swivel head mill-turn machines is also described.

Abstract: A method includes forming a first schedule for a first vehicle to travel in a transportation network. The first schedule includes a first arrival time of the first vehicle at a scheduled location. The method also includes receiving a first trip plan for the first vehicle from an energy management system. The first trip plan is based on the first schedule and designates at least one of tractive efforts or braking efforts to be provided by the first vehicle to reduce at least one of an amount of energy consumed by the first vehicle or an amount of emissions generated by the first vehicle when the first vehicle travels through the transportation network to the scheduled location. The method further includes determining whether to modify the first schedule to avoid interfering with movement of one or more other vehicles by examining the trip plan for the first vehicle.

The method also includes forming an in-situ SixNy layer coupled to the n-type GaN drift layer opposite the n-type GaN substrate and at least partially removing portions of the SixNy layer and the n-type GaN drift layer to form a plurality of void regions and a remaining portion of the SixNy layer. The method further includes selectively regrowing a p-type epitaxial layer in the void regions.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to transmit advertisements to users of mobile communications networks based, at least in part, on such users' real-time geospatial location and known interests. Advertisers transmit advertisements, such as directory listings, coupons, offers and promotions to a mobile advertising service. Each advertisement is associated with at least one geospatial location and at least one category. Users of mobile communication networks submit queries, via their mobile devices, to the mobile adverting service for advertisements relevant to the users' current geospatial location and interests. Advertisements meeting query criteria are selected and transmitted to the users' mobile devices.
