  • Publication number: 20080050063
Abstract: An optical switching system includes a two-dimensional arrangement of a plurality of switching elements. Each switching element includes an optical guiding structure which includes two pairs of waveguides; a driving arrangement for individually moving the switching elements between at least a first and a second position; and a first and a second input and a second output. When a generic switching element is moved in the first position, the first pair of waveguides connects a first input with a first output, and a second input with a second output; when a generic switching element is moved in the second position, the second pair of waveguides connects the first input with the second output, and the second input with the first output. In a first embodiment, the waveguides are provided on a disc shaped carrier and lie in the same plane, which disc is rotated. In a second embodiment, the two pairs of waveguides lie in different planes and the waveguide carrier plate is moved up and down for switching.

  • Patent number: 6373617
Abstract: An optical device having a first input for at least one input optical signal having a random state of polarization and a first optical element capable of dividing, in space, the input optical signal into a pair of optical signals which are substantially parallel and have a predetermined state of polarization perpendicular to each another. The optical device also having a first crystal element for propagation, in free space, of at least the pair of optical signals coming from the first optical element, and the first crystal element being devoid of internal separation planes, and having electro-optical properties and being associated with electrodes so as to apply a voltage in a direction substantially perpendicular to the direction of propagation, along the first crystal element, of the at least one pair of optical signals.

  • Patent number: 6292280
Abstract: An optical device is provided for processing a digital optical signal in parallel and in free space. A device consistent with the invention provides for inputting a digital optical signal in guided propagation, converting the digital optical signal to n digital optical signals in guided propagation, and converting the n digital optical signals to n digital optical signals in free space. In addition, the invention provides for selecting a bit preselected from the at least one temporal series of n bits of each of the n digital optical signals, modifying optically, at least one bit of the spatial figure of the n bits, and outputting the at least one bit of the spatial figure of n bits.

  • Patent number: 6167170
Abstract: Optical switching device comprising:a) first elementary switching module which in turn comprises i) a crystalline element without internal planes of separation and which is capable of rotating the plane of polarization of a polarized optical signal by a predetermined angle under the action of an optical control beam, and ii) a polarization analyzer capable of selecting, according to a predetermined plane, the said polarized optical signal issuing from the said crystalline element, b) first means for supplying the said polarized optical signal to the said elementary switching module, and c) second means for supplying the said optical control beam to the said elementary switching module, in which the said first and second means route at least two different polarized optical signals and at least one optical control beam in the said crystalline element such that the said at least one control beam is substantially collinear with and superimposed on the said at least two polarized optical signals.
