  • Publication number: 20220193060
Abstract: This invention provides methods of treatment for a variety of inflammation pathologies using thione-forming disulfides (TFDs). The treatments are particularly effective in the context of inflammations primarily due to excessive activity of innate immune system components, macrophage activity and inflammation arising from excessive production of IL-1. TFD inhibition of both IL-1 and IL-6 can reduce the detrimental effects of the cytokine storms known to increase morbidity and mortality caused by certain infections, such as COVID-19 viral pneumonia.

  • Patent number: 8163776
Abstract: The invention provides for the methods of modulating an immune response in an individual by administration of a thione-forming disulfide (TFD). Immunomodulatory responses include, but are not limited to, increased natural killer cell activity, expansion of NK cell population, decreased B cell population, decreased antibody production, and increased mitogenic potential. Methods of modulating such immune responses and the uses of immunomodulation are provided herein.

  • Patent number: 6043256
Abstract: A method of treating a human subject to inhibit mutagenic effects of carcinogens by administering to the subject a composition comprising a sufficient amount of 6,6'-dithiodinicotinic acid to inhibit activity of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase in said subject to thereby inhibit said effects. Also provided is a method of inhibiting occurrence of mutations and of cancers derived from mutations, which method comprises administration to a subject of a composition comprising a sufficient amount of 6,6'-dithiodinicotinic acid.

  • Patent number: 4764520
Abstract: This invention relates to a method for preventing the occurrence of leukemia in mammals. Alternately, in mammals affected with leukemia, the course of the disease is delayed and life expectancy and well-being are increased. This is achieved by administration of 6-mercaptonicotinic acid or its alkali metal salts.

Date of Patent: August 16, 1988
Inventors: Herschel S. Zackheim, Davide R. Grassetti
  • Patent number: 4521425
Abstract: This invention relates to a method for treating a mammal to decrease its blood cortisol level with the administration of 6-mercaptonicotinic acid.

  • Patent number: 4378364
Abstract: Cancer patients following surgery are treated to lessen pain, induce a feeling of well-being and increase appetite by administering to the mammal an effective dosage of a non-toxic dithiobis-heterocyclic compound, belonging to the class of thione-forming disulfides, such as 6,6'-dithiodinicotinic acid (CPDS) which is capable of preferentially reacting with peripheral rather than intracellular sulfhydryl groups. In addition to this blocking effect, treatment with compounds of this type also has the effect of modifying the electric charge of cell surfaces. This blocking of peripheral sulfhydryl groups is not accompanied by toxic effects in laboratory mammals or in man.

  • Patent number: 4152439
Abstract: It has been discovered that administration to human subjects of an effective dosage of a non-toxic dithiobisheterocyclic compound, such as 6,6'-dithiodinicotinic acid, causes an increased sense of well-being and hyperactivity, without any obvious neurological findings or other undesirable side-effects.
